Should homeowner's insurance be updated after putting your home into a Revocable Living Trust?

It’s definitely advisable—highly recommended, actually—to update your homeowners insurance when your real estate deed is retitled into a revocable living trust here in Texas. The big reason? Mismatch between the deed (trust as owner) and the policy (you as individual) can give insurers grounds to postpone or even try and deny claims, even if you’ve paid premiums for years.

So while you are still the true owner and the trust has the same tax identification number as you, and the Texas Constitution guarantees continuation of your homestead tax exemptions (with the proper language), this process is low-effort, there is no extra premium usually, and it just keeps your whole estate plan solid.

It is so simple - keep you (or the residents/trustee) as the primary named insured for full coverage on premise liability, contents, and all structures. Then add the trust as an additional insured (sometimes called “additional named insured”). This way, the trust gets paid directly if there’s a loss—no delays —and you stay protected without hassles. Some carriers let the trust be a co-named insured, but sticking it as additional insured is safer and simpler.

Be sure and send your agent or insurance carrier a copy of the new deed and the Certificate of Trust. Finally, I advise getting written confirmation the change was done.

Remember To Change Your Beneficiary Designations After Life Events

Life moves fast—marriage, divorce, kids, grandkids, even a new job—and suddenly your old beneficiary forms don’t match your reality anymore. Think about it: that 401(k) you set up in your twenties might still list your ex-spouse, or your life insurance could name a sibling who’s no longer close. These little oversights can lead to big headaches for your family later. The good news? Updating them is usually free, quick, and painless—just a form from your bank, employer, or insurer.

The rule of thumb: review every three years or after any major change. Got married? Add your spouse. Had a baby? Name them. Divorced? Cross off the old name ASAP—Texas law doesn’t always auto-update these, so don’t rely on “common sense.” And if you’ve got a trust (like a revocable living trust), make sure it’s listed where it makes sense—especially for assets you want to avoid probate.

Pro tip: keep a folder with all your designations; it’s easier than digging through emails later.

Bottom line—don’t let yesterday’s choices control tomorrow’s money. A five-minute check today could save your loved ones months of court drama. Grab your coffee, pull up those accounts, and tweak what needs tweaking. Hope this helps!
