As Memorial Day approaches, I want to take a moment to recognize and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have today, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to pause and remember them.

My office will be closed on Monday, May 25th, in observance of Memorial Day. I’ll resume normal hours on Tuesday, May 26th, and will respond to any messages as soon as I can once I’m back.

Wishing you a thoughtful and meaningful Memorial Day.

As National Small Business Month comes to a close, it’s a great time to ask yourself an important question: What would happen if a partner suddenly left your business or if you lost someone who plays a key role in daily operations?

Planning for key person dependency and having strong business divorce clauses in place can make all the difference when the unexpected happens. These tools help protect the business you’ve worked so hard to build.

May marks the start of National Moving Month and a busy real estate season. As activity ramps up, many sellers begin wondering about pricing, timing, preparation, and how long the selling process might take. Getting clarity early can help prevent rushed decisions as the market heats up.

Here are a few of the questions we hear most often:

• Is now a good time to list, or should I wait? Peak season usually brings stronger buyer demand, but your timing should reflect your readiness and local market conditions.

• How should my home be priced? A strong pricing strategy is based on real data — your home’s true value and recent comparable sales.

• What improvements matter? Minor repairs, fresh paint, and simple curb appeal updates can make a meaningful impact without delaying your listing.

• How long will it take to sell? Preparation, pricing, and visibility all play a role, including flexibility with showings.

If you’re preparing for a sale this season, our team at Maul Law is here to help you navigate the legal side of the process with confidence. Reach out anytime if you have questions or want guidance as you move forward.

Many new graduates and their families are beginning their housing search, and for many, this is the first time navigating a lease. One of the most confusing parts of that process can be the security deposit.

Security deposits often become a source of disagreement when the amount, storage method, return process, or allowable deductions are not clearly understood. State laws outline how much a landlord may collect, when and how the deposit must be returned, and what deductions are permitted, so it is important to know your rights before signing.

If you have questions about a security deposit or another rental concern, I am here to help. Give me a call at 616-202-2505 and I will make sure you understand your legal protections.

May is National Moving Month, and it’s one of the busiest times of year for anyone planning a move or purchase. As the season picks up, I often hear from clients who are unsure about competition, timing, and what it really takes to be prepared in a fast-moving market.

Here are a few questions buyers should keep in mind as activity ramps up:

• Is it harder to buy during peak season? Competition can increase, but there’s usually more inventory available too, which helps balance things out.

• Do I need to be pre-approved before looking at homes? Pre-approval gives you clarity on your budget and strengthens your offer when it’s time to move quickly.

• How aggressive should my offer be? Price matters, but so do terms, timing, and flexibility. Strong earnest money and fewer contingencies can help show serious intent.

• What should I prioritize when homes move fast? Preparation, clear priorities, and readiness to act make the biggest difference.

These questions are a great starting point, but having an experienced professional in your corner truly makes the process smoother. If you’re preparing for a move this season, I’m here to help you navigate each step.

Feel free to share your own moving questions in the comments!
