DHS Automatically Extends Temporary Protected Status for Lebanon
This information is posted on the USCIS website. We are a private immigration law firm providing support and guidance.
Release Date : 05/28/2026

The Department of Homeland Security posted a Federal Register notice on the six-month automatic extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Lebanon, from May 28, 2026, through Nov. 27, 2026. Under the TPS statute, if the secretary of homeland security does not decide whether a country still qualifies for TPS at least 60 days before the country’s TPS designation expires, its TPS designation is automatically extended for six months.
Former Secretary Noem and Secretary Mullin, who was sworn in on March 24, 2026, were unable to make an informed determination on Lebanon’s TPS designation by the March 28, 2026 statutory deadline due to the dynamic and quickly unfolding events in Lebanon that required a new review of country conditions and impacted the ability to provide information for Secretarial consideration.
A six-month extension allows existing beneficiaries of TPS Lebanon to keep their TPS through Nov. 27, 2026, if they still meet the eligibility requirements for TPS. Employment Authorization Documents that were already issued under Lebanon’s TPS designation will automatically be valid through Nov. 27, 2026.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Will Grant ‘Adjustment of Status’ Only in Extraordinary Circumstances
This information is posted on the USCIS website. We are a private immigration law firm providing support and guidance.
Release Date: 05/22/2026

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced a new policy memo reiterating the fact that, consistent with long-standing immigration law and immigration court decisions, aliens seeking adjustment of status must do so through consular processing via the Department of State outside of the country. Officers are directed to consider all relevant factors and information on a case-by-case basis when determining whether an alien warrants this extraordinary form of relief.
“We’re returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation’s immigration system properly. From now on, an alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. When aliens apply from their home country, it reduces the need to find and remove those who decide to slip into the shadows and remain in the U.S. illegally after being denied residency,” said USCIS Spokesman Zach Kahler.
“Nonimmigrants, like students, temporary workers, or people on tourist visas, come to the U.S. for a short time and for a specific purpose. Our system is designed for them to leave when their visit is over. Their visit should not function as the first step in the Green Card process. Following the law allows the majority of these cases to be handled by the State Department at U.S. consular offices abroad and frees up limited USCIS resources to focus on processing other cases that fall under its purview, including visas for victims of violent crime and human trafficking, naturalization applications, and other priorities. The law was written this way for a reason, and despite the fact that it has been ignored for years, following it will help make our system fairer and more efficient.”

The next step is filing a cap-subject H-1B petition properly and on time. USCIS says selected registrations are notified through USCIS online accounts, and petitions must be filed during the designated filing period using the correct form edition and filing method. For the FY 2027 cap season, USCIS said selection notifications were completed by March 31, 2026 and that cap-subject petitions must use the 02/27/26 edition of Form I-129 beginning April 1.

Before leaving the U.S., make sure you understand your documents, travel history, and what to expect at reentry, especially if you’ve spent extended time abroad or have a pending application.

USCIS and CBP caution that longer trips may lead to closer review upon return.

Planning ahead can help you avoid unnecessary issues.

US to screen for Ebola at airports, suspend visa services from outbreak areas
This information is reprinted from the Jamaica Observer/May 18, 2026. We are a private immigration law firm providing support and guidance.
WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — The United States (US) announced Monday it is bolstering precautions to prevent the spread of Ebola, including screening air travelers from outbreak-hit areas and temporarily suspending visa services from the region.
The public health measures announced by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention come as the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo an international health emergency.
More than 90 deaths are suspected to have been caused by the current outbreak.
“At this time, CDC assesses the immediate risk to the general US public as low, but we will continue to evaluate the evolving situation and may adjust public health measures as additional information becomes available,” the health agency said in a statement.
In addition to screening at airports, the CDC said it was implementing entry restrictions on non-US passport holders if they had travelled to Uganda, DRC or South Sudan within the past 21 days.
The US embassy in Kampala, meanwhile, said it had temporarily paused all visa services, and that impacted applicants had been notified.
The CDC said over the weekend it was working to coordinate “the safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans who are directly affected by this outbreak”.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the strain responsible for the current spread of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever.
Ninety-one reported deaths are suspected to have been caused by the current surge in cases, according to the latest figures released on Sunday by Congolese Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba.
Around 350 suspected cases have been reported. Most of those affected are aged between 20 and 39 and more than 60 per cent are women.
The US under President Donald Trump formally withdrew from the WHO this year.
CDC officials have emphasised they are collaborating with international partners as well as health officials in impacted countries.
The public health measures announced Monday will include continued “deployment of CDC personnel to support outbreak containment efforts in affected regions” as well as assistance with contract tracing and laboratory testing, the agency said.
