New Jersey’s legal landscape just shifted, and if you’re caught in a public dispute, the stakes are higher than they used to be.
NJ has introduced specific legislation regarding "inciting a public brawl." While many are used to seeing "disorderly conduct" on a summons, this new charge is more targeted. Disorderly conduct is often a broad "catch-all," but the brawl charge specifically penalizes the act of starting or escalating a fight in public.
With everyone carrying a smartphone, these incidents are almost always recorded. But here’s the thing: a video only shows what the lens sees. It doesn't show the threats made before the camera started rolling, and it doesn't always capture the full context of the situation.
Even with video evidence, you have rights. Whether it was self-defense or protecting someone else, the "story" on the screen isn't always the truth of the law.
If you or a loved one are facing these new charges, don't assume the case is closed just because there's a video. You need an aggressive defense that looks beyond the frame.
