Spring is Michigan's wettest stretch of the year and your basement is the first place to feel it. Here are some tips to make sure your sump pump is working properly and your basement stays dry.

- Test your sump pump now by pouring a bucket of water into the pit to confirm it activates.

- A battery backup is worth having. If heavy rain knocks out power, your primary pump goes with it.

- Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover sump pump failure or groundwater flooding.
