Update: Today I was notified that the remaining two siblings would be placed with their other four siblings. These children will continue to heal together. Thank goodness for amazing foster and adoptive families who choose to bring children into their homes, even homes that are already “filled with children” but are not “full”!

Today was one of those days of highs and lows. What started out as a day where a client let my Assistant and I both know that they were displeased with the result of a case, I then drove to Brazos County to represent children in a motion hearing that would likely change the course of their future. I do not take my role lightly as an ad litem attorney for children, hearing such as this caused me a lot of personal conflict, as I want to make sure that everyone’s motive is only the best interest of the children. The facts won this case. I was merely the voice for the children and hopefully the voice of common sense and reason. The judge had what is a difficult decision to make, but he ruled in our favor. Due to Privacy reasons I won’t say much more, other than children deserve to be raised with their siblings if at all possible. Children whose parents‘ rights have been terminated, have already lost so much of their familial connections that any time it is possible for them to be adopted with their siblings, that option needs to be thoroughly investigated. When the judge read his ruling today, I ended up in tears. Happy tears.

I love talking to everyone. I would sit and chat with all of my clients on a daily basis if I had the luxury of more time. Unfortunately, my schedule is tight. Therefore our office policy on phone calls is as follows:
Phone calls - My staff is amazing and is ready to help you! Due to court, meetings, consultations, and other commitments, I personally am not available to take phone calls on a daily basis. I, however, generally work 8am until 5:30 pm daily somewhere, and then I take home a stack of files and laptop and work until after midnight on a daily basis, including most weekends. Sometimes I will return calls evenings and weekends or text clients later in the evening. For the most part, my staff handles phone calls and I respond by email. This is what works best for my office. When a client demands a phone call, I will call but often it is not productive as it becomes a conversation that centers around “why am I hard to get on the phone”. This is not productive. If you have a question or concern on your case, please email me at [email protected]. I respond to my current clients as soon as possible. If you are seeking legal advice on a new matter, please expect to hear from my assistant. If your matter is urgent, call my office and speak with my assistant. If you get voicemail, you may leave a message OR just hang up and call back. You may also text us at 254-274-6540 for assistance. If you do not get a timely response, there may be a technical difficulty (Internet, phones, computers, power, other IT issues, database issues, or we may be tied up with a case/client matter such as a will signing). Please give us a little grace but also reach out again. It is possible a message could get missed. We are here to help but we are human.

The best part of being an attorney is handling adoptions!!!

Reposted from Lacey Deal: Almost 12 years ago, I met a little 2-year-old boy who had no idea how much he would change my life. From the moment you came into my world, you became a piece of my heart.
I didn’t get to hold you as a baby, hear your first cry, or see your very first steps, but I have been blessed with so many special moments. I got to hear your little voice as you learned to talk, watch you grow into your own personality, see your first days of school, celebrate your birthdays, cheer you on through your accomplishments, and stand beside you through the hard days too.
I will never forget 10 years ago on my wedding day. You were just a little boy, and you were so nervous to walk down the aisle by yourself that I carried you down. I didn’t know then all the memories we would make, but I knew you were already someone incredibly special to me.
Now that little boy is 13 and turning 14 next month. Watching you grow into the young man you are today has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.
The truth is, the paperwork never made you my son. A judge’s signature didn’t create the love between us. You were my son long before today, because my heart knew it all along.
Today we just made official what has always been true. And the sweetest part is we never planned for this day to fall on our 10th wedding anniversary—the courts and everyone involved made that happen for us. What a beautiful reminder that some moments are meant to be.
Thank you for letting me be your mom. Thank you for trusting me to love you, guide you, and walk beside you through life. Thank you for letting me be there for the little moments and the big ones. It has been an honor watching you grow, and I hope you always know how deeply loved you are.
I am so proud of you, son. You will always have a piece of my heart. ❤️
