“I have never seen a calf follow a bull around the pasture.”

A judge said those words years ago at the end of a long custody hearing, and I have never forgotten them.

Video credit to Nic, who shared this beautiful video of his handsome South Poll bull walking through the pasture with all the little bull calves following close behind him — like they want to be just like dad.

I hate fighting over children it can really take a toll on my heart.

One of the last cases that really stayed with me involved a good father fighting to be part of his child’s life.

The child’s mother had struggled with addiction and instability, and she had even told him the child was not his.

But he showed up.

He fought.

He wanted to be the father that child needed.

Make up for the time he lost.

In my opinion, he deserved to be the primary parent.

Instead, after the judge gave a long speech about the importance of young children staying primarily with their mother, that dad was given every other weekend visitation.

Just another “weekend daddy.”

Then the judge ended with that line:

“I have never seen a calf follow a bull around the pasture.”

I wish I could tag that judge in this video.

Because here they are all following the bull.

Children need strong, loving, steady men in their lives.

Fathers matter.

Grandfathers matter.

Uncles, coaches, mentors, and good male role models matter.

This is not about taking anything away from good mothers.

Good mothers are priceless.

But good fathers are not optional.

They are not secondary.

They are not just visitors in their children’s lives.

Sometimes the pasture teaches a lesson the courtroom missed.

Share this with a Judge that needs to see it.

Some victories in the courtroom don’t come from getting every charge dismissed. Sometimes the real victory is helping someone reclaim their life.

We recently represented a client who was facing serious consequences and the possibility of prison. While we didn’t get every charge dropped, we were able to keep this client out of prison and focused on something far more important — recovery, accountability, and a second chance.

Today, that client is over 68 days clean and sober after battling addiction for nearly 20 years. Passed every drug test. Completed community service. No treatment needed. Back on the right path.

That’s what this job is really about.

Being a lawyer is not always just about legal advice. Sometimes it’s about personal guidance, believing in people when they don’t believe in themselves, and helping show the court and the DA that rehabilitation can accomplish more than incarceration ever could.

Proud of this client for putting in the hard work and changing their life. Stories like this are why we do what we do.

Stopped in Fort Valley, Georgia today with Jorge after a jail visit and found a true gem Puddin Soul Food.

Now let me tell you… when you walk into a place like that, you’re not just ordering lunch, you’re entering into a full blown Southern cross examination of your willpower. And I lost… decisively.

We had just about every Southern delight they could put on a plate crispy fried chicken that could make a grown man reconsider his life choices, greens cooked like somebody’s grandmother was still running the kitchen, mac & cheese that didn’t come to play, and cornbread that ought to be entered into evidence as Exhibit A for perfection.

Some days in this line of work are heavy. Courtrooms, clients, tough conversations. But then you sit down to a meal like that, laugh a little, and remember there’s still plenty of good in this world especially in South Georgia kitchens.

If you’re anywhere near Fort Valley, do yourself a favor and stop by Puddin Soul Food. Just be prepared… you won’t be leaving hungry.

The only complaints I want to hear from my family are: this house is too big, this car is too fast, this steak is too juicy, and this lobster is too buttery.

Not because of material things—but because of what they represent.

Freedom.
Provision.
Hard work paying off.
A life built on purpose.

I’m working every day to create a life where the “problems” are blessings… and where my family never has to worry about material things.

Grateful for how far we’ve come. Hungry for where we’re going.

❄️ Cold weather reminder ❄️

Schools may be closed.
Roads may be icy.
You may not feel like going.

But unless the Chief Judge of your circuit cancels court, COURT IS STILL ON.

Only the Chief Judge can cancel court.
Not Facebook.
Not the school system.
Not the weather app.

And I promise you this—the judge will be more than happy to issue a bench warrant if you decide to stay home.

So set the alarm.
Scrape the windshield.
Get dressed.
And be in court on time.

“I hope you did not take that into the courthouse!”
It isn’t just a fashion choice, it’s practically an admission of guilt. 😂 Gotta love the people in our firm. Renee always brings the goods.
