🤔 What if I told you this little door once kept Portland homes warm all winter?
If you've ever noticed a small metal door near the foundation of an older home, you've probably found a coal chute.

Before natural gas and electric heating, coal was delivered directly to homes and poured through these chutes into a basement coal bin to fuel the furnace. It was the original home delivery system!

Many older Portland homes still have coal chutes, making them a fascinating reminder of the city's history and how homes have evolved over the last century.

One of my favorite things about being a Realtor is discovering hidden features like these and sharing the stories behind them. Every home has a history worth exploring.

Everyone should come with a Warning Label. Here is mine:

⚠️ WARNING: SHENNA HOWELL ⚠️
Approach with honesty, ambition, and preferably a good bottle of red wine.
She’s warm, loyal, resourceful—and fully capable of handling the chaos everyone else is pretending not to see. She’ll identify the problem, create a plan, negotiate the solution, sell the house, and still have time to check on her sourdough.
Do not confuse kindness with weakness. She notices everything, remembers what you said, and expects you to mean it. Come with integrity, communicate clearly, and please leave the excuses at home.
Possible side effects include honest advice, higher standards, bold business ideas, Oregon real estate knowledge, and the sudden realization that your nonsense isn’t going to work here.
She can handle pressure.
She can handle problems.
She can handle difficult people.
What she cannot handle is fake energy, wasted time, or foolishness dressed up as confidence.
Proceed accordingly—and don’t say you weren’t warned. 😏

🚨🚨🚨Your Help is Needed 🚨🚨🚨
Kids will be back to school before we know it and school essentials, PE clothes, shoes, and other items are needed. My Fathers House has kids that need our help. They are needing 20 people to donate 150.00 Visa gift cards to make this possible. Reach out to my friend Jamie to help out.

These Aren't Manhole Covers... and They're Not Coal Chutes Either! 🤯
When I first saw these, I had to do a double take.
Most people guess they're coal chutes, old septic lids, or even secret underground bunkers.
They're actually vintage underground garbage cans! 🗑️
Years ago—before the rolling garbage bins we know today—many homes had these built into the ground. Homeowners would place their trash inside the metal container below grade where the cooler temperatures helped reduce odors, discouraged pests, and kept garbage out of sight until collection day.
It's one of those fascinating little pieces of home history that's easy to walk right past without ever knowing what it is.
🏡 One of my favorite parts of real estate is discovering these hidden details that tell the story of a home. Whether it's vintage underground garbage cans, old milk doors, sleeping porches, coal chutes, or mysterious basement features, every house has something unique to teach us.

This condo sale closed last week,( Im a little behind on posting). This was my first Off Market property transaction. The buyer came in unrepresented, but thankfully, he is a seasoned buyer. The transaction took less than 2 weeks from start to finish. Thank you Jeanne for allowing me the opportunity to help you with the sell of your condo!
