We are nearly 6 months into the year already… which means now is the perfect time to ask yourself:

“Do I actually know how my business is doing financially?”

You might need bookkeeping/accounting help if:

• You’re behind on reconciling bank accounts
• You don’t know if your business is actually profitable
• Tax season felt stressful or disorganized
• You mix personal and business expenses
• Your QuickBooks isn’t up to date
• You’re unsure how much to set aside for taxes
• You’ve grown and can no longer keep up with the books yourself
• You wait until tax time to look at your numbers
• Your Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet doesn’t make sense to you
• Payroll, sales tax, or contractor payments are becoming overwhelming

Good accounting is more than just “doing taxes.” It helps you understand your business, make informed decisions, and avoid costly surprises.

At Benson Accounting & Tax Solutions, we help business owners stay organized year-round with bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning, QuickBooks support, and business consulting.

Whether you need monthly bookkeeping or help cleaning up messy books, we’d be happy to talk.

1099s: Issuing & Receiving — A January Reminder

January is an important month for both business owners who issue 1099s and individuals or businesses who receive them.

If you issued payments:
In general, businesses may be required to issue a 1099-NEC to contractors or service providers when total payments to that person or business were $600 or more during the year.

This is a good time to:
• Review who you paid during the year
• Confirm which payments may require a 1099
• Verify you have accurate name, address, and taxpayer information
• Address any bookkeeping gaps before filing deadlines

If you expect to receive a 1099:
If you were paid $600 or more for services, you may receive one or more 1099 forms reporting that income.

It’s a good idea to:
• Watch for forms in January
• Compare them to your own records
• Keep them with your tax documents

Taking time to review this now can help avoid last-minute issues later in the month.

Welcome to the New Year

As we begin a new year, it’s a good time to pause, reflect, and get organized for the upcoming tax season.

For individual taxpayers, this is a good time to:
• Watch for tax documents as they arrive
• Review last year’s return
• Prepare for a smoother filing process

For business owners, the start of the year is especially important:
• Review year-end bookkeeping
• Confirm payroll and contractor filings
• Organize business expenses and records
• Prepare for upcoming reporting requirements

If you’re a business owner and your bookkeeping needs clean-up or organization before tax filing begins, now is a good time to address it. Getting books in order early can help avoid delays once forms are released.

At Benson Accounting & Tax Solutions, we are preparing behind the scenes so we’re ready when filing officially begins.

We are accepting new clients this year and will be in the office seven days a week once tax season is underway.

Wishing everyone a healthy, successful start to the year.

Why Credentials Matter When Choosing a Tax Professional

Not all tax preparers are licensed the same way, and understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision.

Enrolled Agents (EA)
• Federally licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury
• Authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS
• Specialize exclusively in tax law
• Required to complete ongoing continuing education, including ethics

Certified Public Accountants (CPA)
• Licensed at the state level
• Trained in accounting and financial reporting
• May provide tax, audit, and advisory services
• Required to complete continuing education to maintain licensure

Unlicensed Tax Preparers
• May prepare tax returns if they meet IRS requirements
• Are not licensed by a state or federal agency
• Have limited or no authority to represent clients before the IRS
• Continuing education requirements may vary

No credential is “one size fits all.” The right professional depends on your situation — whether that’s a straightforward return, a small business, multiple years of filings, or IRS correspondence.

We believe clients should understand who is preparing their return and what credentials they hold so they can choose the level of experience and oversight that fits their needs.

As tax season approaches, this is a good time to ask questions and make sure you’re working with a professional you trust.

What Is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?

An Enrolled Agent is a tax professional licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

EAs are authorized to:
✔️ Prepare federal tax returns
✔️ Represent clients before the IRS
✔️ Handle audits, notices, and tax resolution matters
✔️ Specialize exclusively in federal tax law

Continuing education is a core requirement of the EA credential. Enrolled Agents must complete ongoing continuing education every year, including ethics training, to maintain their license and stay current with constantly changing tax laws.

Because EAs focus exclusively on taxes and are required to stay up to date, many clients choose an EA when they need help with:
• Small business tax filings
• Multi-year or back tax returns
• IRS letters or notices
• Ongoing tax planning

As we head into tax season and IRS forms begin to roll out, this is a great time to start gathering documents and organizing your information.

We are accepting new clients for this upcoming tax season and will be available seven days a week once filing officially begins.
