Summer is winding down. Those discussions and plans that were so easy to put off while enjoying the sun and beach and family vacations still deserve your attention. You owe it to those around you. Take a moment and consider how you have planned for the future. Do you have a Will? If not, then why not?

Summer is almost here. Snow and ice is a distant memory. The kids are out of school. Family trips are being planned. Plenty has changed so far this year EXCEPT your estate planning is still on the back burner waiting to be addressed. With all the fun you will hopefully have this summer don't forget to prioritize the decisions that will matter the most for years to come.

Tomorrow, May 1 is Law Day, a time meant to reflect on the role of law in our society and how it affects our daily lives. No matter the time of year, it is worthwhile to consider how our legal system has influenced our lives and can continue to do so. Whatever your legal needs are, be informed and ask questions. And if you don't have a Will, ask yourself why not?

Estate Planning Blunders

1. Naming specific investments. Make sure you still own what is listed or remove the bequest from your Will.
2. Always list contingent beneficiaries.
3. Failure to fund revocable trusts. Some assets are easier to transfer than others, through the language of the trust agreement, however, others require transfer of legal title.
4. Not reviewing documents. Don’t take the set it and forget it approach. Circumstances change as do priorities and making sure your plans accurately capture your current wishes rather than your past ones is vital.
5. Protect your heirs from themselves. Some are more capable than others and making sure they have the maturity and financial literacy to handle the changes they face should not be dismissed.
6. Making children joint owners of your assets. It sounds great in theory but don’t forget that their creditors can become your creditors.

Have you thought about Estate Planning? Starting the process is as easy as thinking about the following questions:

1) What would you want to happen to your property if you died tomorrow?
2) Have you made the preparations necessary to fully carry out your wishes and protect those around you?
3) Are your beneficiary designations up to date?
4) Do you have a Power of Attorney or Health Care Proxy?
5) Have you considered long term care insurance?
