Born and raised in New York City, she grew up surrounded by the city's vibrant cultural scene. She studied Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts and later earned her Master's degree in Creative Writing from Columbia University. Bessie's artwork has been featured in several galleries and exhibitions, and she has published several short stories and poems in literary magazines.

Spent a day in a rural village near Luang Prabang – staying in traditional stilt houses, helping with rice planting, and learning weaving from friendly locals. The endless green paddies against misty mountains at sunrise were breathtaking. Laos people are incredibly warm and welcoming; it reminded me what matters most in life.
