A bill moving through the North Carolina legislature this year could change how divorce works in this state for the first time in decades. ⚖️ Senate Bill 626, introduced in April 2026, would cut North Carolina's mandatory separation period for divorce from a full year down to six months.

The bill includes a few important carve-outs. Couples with an uncontested divorce and no minor children could waive the six-month wait entirely if both sides agree, and documented victims of domestic violence, backed by law enforcement records, program documentation, or a medical professional's statement, could seek an immediate divorce without waiting at all. The bill would also abolish two old common-law lawsuits still on the books in North Carolina: alienation of affection, which lets a spurned spouse sue a third party for interfering in a marriage, and criminal conversation, a civil claim tied to adultery.

North Carolina has required a full year of separation before divorce for a long time, so cutting that to six months, with an even faster path for documented abuse survivors, would be one of the more significant family law changes the state has seen recently. 📋 As of now, the bill is still working its way through the General Assembly and has not yet become law.

Do you think a shorter separation period helps people move on more quickly, or does the current one-year wait serve a real purpose?
