🌊 Lunchtime Law Nugget 🌊

The flooding across Cocke and Greene Counties has been absolutely devastating. If you’ve been affected, there are some things you need to do RIGHT NOW to protect yourself legally.

📸 Document EVERYTHING before you touch it. This includes, but not limited to: video, photos, every room, every angle, outside and in.

📋 Write down every damaged item while it’s fresh.

📁 Keep every single receipt: repairs, supplies, temporary housing, all of it.

📞 Call your insurance company and take notes: who you spoke to (employee ID number if they have one), what time and what they said.

🚫 Don’t throw anything away until it’s all documented.

Our Community is Hurting Again

Yesterday morning, flash floods tore through Greene and Cocke counties, and our hearts are heavy. Teresa Diane Young, 64, lost her life after being swept away by floodwaters in the Bybee and Parrottsville areas. We are holding her family close in our thoughts and prayers.

Up to five inches of rain fell overnight around Bybee, Parrottsville, Caney Branch, and Cedar Creek. Water reached six to eight feet in some spots, and the fire chief said it best: “It’s like a nightmare. Never in my life would I ever think I’d be in this situation again, and here we are.” For so many families, this is the second time in two years they’ve lost everything. That is absolutely devastating.

Teresa is reportedly the 24th weather-related fatality in East Tennessee in the last ten years. That number should stop all of us in our tracks.

If your property was damaged, here’s what I want you to know:

Property Assessor teams will be making rounds to evaluate damage. Please DOCUMENT everything before they arrive. Photos, videos, timestamps. Don’t skip this step. Standard homeowner’s insurance usually does NOT cover flood damage, so knowing what you have and getting it on record matters more than people realize. And if you feel like drainage issues from a neighboring property or the county made things worse on your land, that’s worth a conversation with an attorney.

You’ve been through enough. If you have questions about your rights, please reach out. That’s what we’re here for. 💙

📍 Practicing in Hamblen County & Greene County

When it comes to your family, the details matter—and so does having the right advocate in your corner. Catherine represents clients in custody, divorce and other family law matters across both Hamblen and Greene Counties.

⚖️ Know This:
In custody cases, the court may appoint a guardian ad litem (GAL)—an attorney whose role is to represent the child’s best interests.
They investigate, speak with everyone involved and provide recommendations that can carry real weight in court.

Understanding roles like this can make a difference in how you approach your case.

🥪 Lunch Break Law Bite: Juvenile Court Edition ⚖️

Not all courtrooms are created equal; especially when it comes to juvenile cases.

In Tennessee (and most states), juvenile court isn’t about “mini criminal trials”. It’s designed around rehabilitation, not punishment. That means judges have more flexibility to consider school performance, home life and support systems—not just the alleged offense.

Quick facts you might not know:
• Juvenile records are often confidential (not always public like adult court)
• The goal is usually treatment, guidance, and structure; NOT incarceration
• Parents/guardians are typically part of the process from start to finish
• Outcomes can include counseling, probation, community service or placement programs

Juvenile law is complex and every decision carries long-term impact on a young person’s future.

⚖️ Legal Terms People Love to Misuse (Lunch Break Edition)

Let’s clear a few things up real quick:

• “I’m pressing charges.”
Not exactly. Only the state decides whether to bring criminal charges—not individuals.

• “That’s illegal.”
Is it though? There’s a difference between something being unfair and actually violating the law.

• “I have a warrant.”
Unless it’s signed by a judge… you probably don’t.

• “We had a verbal agreement, so it’s not binding.”
Wrong again. Verbal contracts can absolutely be enforceable depending on the situation.

• “I’ll sue for emotional distress.”
It’s not that simple—there are specific legal standards that have to be met.

Moral of the story: TikTok law ≠ real law.
If you’re unsure, ask an attorney before you act on it.
