After a workplace gate swung into a driver’s work truck, the impact left the client dealing with injuries that affected multiple areas of the body and disrupted daily life. The case faced real hurdles from the start: the company disputed responsibility, and there was no formal police report to rely on. Our team built the claim through a careful investigation, collection of medical records, and aggressive litigation steps—including filing suit, pursuing discovery, and preparing for depositions—while also addressing lien issues to protect the client’s net recovery. The result was a $500,000 settlement, providing meaningful financial support to help the client pay bills, reduce stress, and move forward with greater stability.

Another great MWCEA Annual Conference is in the books! 📚

We enjoyed our annual happy hour at The Green Turtle in Ocean City, connecting with MWCEA participants and collecting donations for Kids’ Chance of Maryland, which provides scholarships to children whose parents have been seriously injured in work-related incidents. Thank you to everyone who joined us and donated!

We were also proud to have Attorney Monique Lee moderate “Head in the Game: Navigating Brain Injuries in Workers’ Comp,” with Attorney Krista DeSmyter serving as a panelist. The discussion explored diagnosis, treatment, long-term impact, and coordinated case management for brain injury claims.

Last month, Attorney Shakétta Denson Chimber presented an oral argument before Maryland’s highest court, advocating for a client whose case had been dismissed before a jury ever had the chance to hear it. 

In August 2022, a Maryland woman slipped on a freshly mopped floor that had no warning signs or verbal alerts of the potential hazard.  The case raised an important question: when a business’s own employee creates a dangerous condition, can the business avoid responsibility by claiming there was not enough time to warn customers of the hazard they created? Shakétta argued that a reasonable jury could conclude that there were reasonable measures that the business could have taken to warn or restrict customers from the dangerous area and that because of that the client deserved the opportunity to have her case heard by a jury. 
 
In a decision issued on September 25, 2026, the Supreme Court of Maryland agreed and re-instated the client’s premises liability claim, sending it back to the Circuit Court. We are proud of Shakétta’s advocacy before Maryland’s highest court and her role in securing a decision that preserves not only our client’s opportunity to seek accountability and compensation for her injuries, but for other consumers and injured people in Maryland.
