For those of you who have attended a Catholic Church in Wisconsin recently, information was handed out about POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment). This is not something that is common in Wisconsin except possibly in the Rhinelander and LaCrosse areas. The Bishops (all five) in Wisconsin have stated they are opposed to the POLST form and its use. It is important to know that the POLST is not the same as a Health Care Power of Attorney we use in Wisconsin. It is not the same as a Declaration to Physicians form used in Wisconsin. The POLST is a form promoted by a coalition that states its intent is to improve the quality of care people receive at the end of their life. (Sounds good, doesn't it.) The Bishops issued a pastoral statement in July 25. Basically, they are concerned about euthanasia among many other things. There is an article by Steve Wideman "For the Compass" that explains in more detail. The jist of it is the church wants you to have a person (a health care agent) make health care decisions for you. (Common sense - don't you think.) I would rather have a family member or friend I trust making decisions for me based upon my current health issues, instead of checking some blocks on a form and letting doctors decide without any input from my family and friends. So I can honestly say I agree with the Bishops, get a health care power of attorney.
