Governor Polis Appoints Jeffrey M. Schwartz to the 8th Judicial District Court and Michael M. Perez to the Weld County Court in the 19th Judicial District

Tuesday, September 15, 2026

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis appointed Jeffrey M. Schwartz to the 8th Judicial District Court. The vacancy is created by the retirement of the Honorable Juan G. Villaseñor and is effective immediately. Governor Polis also appointed Michael M. Perez to the Weld County Court in the 19th Judicial District. The vacancy is created by the retirement of the Honorable Renee S. Doak and is effective January 13, 2027.

Jeffrey M. Schwartz

Mr. Schwartz is a District Court Magistrate in the 8th Judicial District, a position he has held since 2023. His docket consists of domestic relations matters. Previously, Mr. Schwartz was Founder and Partner at Schwartz & Waible, LLC (2009-2022) and Deputy Public Defender in the Colorado Springs Office of the Colorado State Public Defender (2003-2008). Mr. Schwartz earned his B.A. from Adams State University in 1999 and his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2003.

Michael M. Perez

Mr. Perez is an Associate Attorney at Wagstaff Law Firm, a position he has held since 2025. His practice consists of civil litigation. Previously, Mr. Perez was a Deputy District Attorney in the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office (2021-2025); Deputy District Attorney in the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office (2017-2021); and Law Clerk for Judge Michael Spaan and Judge Dani Crosby, Alaska Superior Court (2015-2016). Mr. Perez earned his B.A. from the University of California Los Angeles in 2011 and his J.D. from the University of California Davis School of Law in 2015.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the following courthouses will be closed due to inclement weather:

Clear Creek County Courts and Probation offices in Georgetown

The following courthouses will have a delayed start:

Adams County Justice Center and Probation offices will open at 10 a.m.

Arapahoe County Combined Courts and Probation offices will open at 10 a.m.

Boulder County Combined Courts and Probation offices will open at 10 a.m.

Broomfield County Combined Courts and Probation offices will open at 10 a.m.

Denver Juvenile Court will open at 10 a.m.

Jefferson County Combined Courts and Probation Offices will open at 10 a.m.

In addition, if you are set for court at Gilpin County Courthouse, a virtual appearance is approved. Gilpin County Courthouse is open.

19th Judicial District Court Judge Finalists Selected

Governor to Appoint New District Court Judge

The 19th Judicial District Nominating Commission has nominated three candidates for a district court judgeship created pursuant to SB25-024, effective July 1, 2026.

Nominees Catharine “Katie” Ann Allsup-Armstrong of Eaton, Sean James Lacefield of Firestone, and Keren Courtney Weitzel of Windsor were selected by the commission on April 24, 2026.

Under the Colorado Constitution, the governor has 15 days from today, within which to appoint one of the nominees as district court judge for the 19th Judicial District (Weld County).
