Chicago real estate is giving full-blown telenovela right now… and honestly? We are SAT.

A federal judge ruled that MRED listings removed from Zillow must go back up, and Zillow can’t selectively ban listings moving forward. ⚖️

At the center of all this drama: seller choice.

Compass supports MRED enforcing its policies because homeowners and agents deserve accurate listing representation and consistent access to the market, no matter where consumers choose to search.

And before anyone panics and throws themselves dramatically across a chaise lounge… consumers still have access to listings through brokerage websites, agent websites, MLS-powered platforms, and the real estate professionals guiding them through it all.

Would anyone like some tea???? Because this is bigger than people realize — and many aren’t explaining it clearly.

Here’s what happened:
Chicago’s MLS (the actual database where every home listing lives) has a rule. If a home goes public, every portal has to show it equally. No favorites. No cherry-picking.

Zillow wasn’t doing that.

So they got cut off. Cold. And now most Chicagoland homes simply don’t appear when you search there.

Here’s what nobody tells you about Zillow:
It was never the market. It was a search engine built on top of the market. The MLS is the market. Agents are the market. Zillow was just… really good at making you think it was the same thing.

And honestly? We’ve been saying this for years. 👀

Remember when we told you the Zestimate was a bad word? That it wasn’t an appraisal, wasn’t an offer, and wasn’t reality? That sellers were overpricing and buyers were panicking over a number generated by an algorithm that’s never stepped foot in your neighborhood?

Yeah. This is that same conversation — just way louder now.

So what does this mean if you’re buying?
You could be searching Zillow right now and think something is wrong with the market but in reality, you’re just looking through a broken window. Switch to Compass, Redfin, or Realtor.com. Full picture. Full inventory.

What does this mean if you’re selling?
Nothing changes for your exposure. The MLS feeds dozens of platforms. One portal going dark doesn’t dim your listing.

The real takeaway?

The most downloaded app isn’t always the most powerful tool. The most connected agent is. We’ve always believed that real estate is too important to leave to an algorithm. This just proves it… again.
