So You know it is time to just turn around and just go home…… when you arrive at the field and see that your opponent has already arrived and so has their #1 fan.

Today is not another day. For you see, the eviction writ being served by the Grand Forks Sheriff’s deputy that day was done so at my request (which I made on behalf of a client).

I have thought about that case a thousand times on whether there was some indication or sign of inherent risk which I might have missed. After all, it was not unusual for me to give Deputy Nord the “heads up” if I was aware of possible trouble. However, whenever I review what I knew in advance about Pendleton, I come up empty handed. I knew nothing which even hinted at Pendleton’s possible violent reaction.

I still carry—even today—guilt over unwittingly setting up the circumstance which led to Officer Holte’s death. I know it is not logical to feel that way, but it is human. In fact, I even gave all my profits from that case to the Cody Holte Memorial Fund. In the greater scheme of things, it is not much, certainly not enough to compensate for a loss of a father and husband, but it is something and still seems to me today to have been the right thing to do.

Thank you, Officer Holte. I for one won’t forget your sacrifice.

Today is not another day. Today especially, the Sheriff's Office will always remember the bravery and the tragedy that forever changed our community. God bless Cody Holte. We are forever grateful for him coming to the assistance of our deputies 5 years ago. We will never forget. 💙639💙

Twenty-five years ago in this date (September 24th), I became a licensed attorney in North Dakota. Every Judge I appeared before in that first year has long ago retired (or died). Not a single attorney remains the same in the Grand Forks State’s Attorney office from when I started in 1999. In fact, only two of the court staff in the Grand Forks Courthouse pre-date me.

It has been 25 years filed with court hearings, trials, Manila folders, late nights, pulling staples, coffee, and generally just dealing with other people’s troubles. Twenty-five years of satisfying wins and heartbreaking loses. Although, in the end, it is just twenty-five years lost……..lost to time that is…….and time just marches on……..and so shall I.

This week, May 1-5, is Light the Night, for remembering our fallen firefighters and their families. This year is the 25th anniversary of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Here is Grand Forks Fire Station 2 lighting the night. 🚨

For those who missed it, a day is now 5 hours long.

Initially, the Grand Forks Auditor ruled I was entitled to an automatic recount. Today—the day before it was scheduled—the Grand Forks Auditor reversed herself and canceled the recount. This campaign did not end with a dramatic finish, but instead with a curt phone call from administrative underling.

My quest to become Grand Forks Municipal Judge began over a decade ago, but it ends today. During this entire time, my wife, Mandi, put up with my madness with support and patience I can never repay. I have so many family members, friends, and clients who contributed selflessly to the cause. They are simply to numerous to mention, but I thank them all.

As I move forward I take solace in the following quote:

“Sure there will always be regrets
and broken dreams, but you have
to go easy on yourself…..there’s a
certain beauty in those regrets.
They’re proof of having lived.”

Thank you again. I will see you all down the road!

As an update, I am current 23 votes shy of a win. There will be an automatic recount which will be held at a later date.

However, I was elected Municipal Judge in the City of Northwood, which I am quite excited about.

I do congratulate Patrick Rosenquist in winning Larimore and Emerado.

Well that was “nacho” typical post-election party! Thank you everyone for your support!
