Well, Election Day was not exactly what we wanted or expected, and we definitely were not alone.
There is no sugarcoating the outcome. To repeat the eloquent words of former president George W. Bush after his side had lost an election a few years back, “It was a thumping.”
That’s the way it goes sometimes in our American democracy. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. But after a free and fair election, the right thing to do is acknowledge the results and congratulate your opponent, which I did last night. It is now time to rest and reflect, and commit to our community to keep working to make it better.
Let’s also acknowledge the professional work of the staff at the Wayne County Board of Elections. They ran a very smooth election with huge local turnout over 17 days of early voting and on Election Day. Election workers across the nation have been bullied and subjected to scrutiny and unfair stress. They do their jobs professionally to run elections fairly, count votes accurately, and in the process protect our faith in our democracy. They are a great service to our community and country.
I am proud of our campaign and extremely thankful to all of you who have supported us with your time and energy. I hope people give all newly elected officeholders a chance whether they voted for them or not. We can do that without compromising our values. We can do that and also hold public officials accountable.
I enjoyed valuable conversations with people across Wayne County during this campaign - including with some who did not vote for me. As folks reflect on this election, let’s also remember the common values we share and the goals we have to make our community a better place to work, live, and raise healthy families. We will be more successful when we find common ground. I am committed to that.
Thank you again,
Judge Ericka James
