This is me. As early as high school, “Rocky Horror” opened my eyes to different types of people, cultures and love. Every weekend during my freshman year in college, friends and I would dress up and act out the movie in front of the screen at the Exeter Street movie theater in Boston. I played Frank-N-Furter —and for me it’s a core memory not just as a performer, but as a human being. “Don’t dream it, be it” will continue to be my mission. Long live the great Tim Curry!

(And special shout out to my college roommate Jeff Kintzer who made sure I didn’t get my ass kicked walking through Kenmore Square at 2am wearing fishnets.)

Too stupid to quit

When you take a month off, you have a lot of time to think. I’m sharing this morning’s mental ramblings. Starting a small business is a heroic act. I don’t mean to flatter myself; I’m just being honest. It means risking almost everything you have on something that might fail, in full view of everyone you know. We opened on a shoestring budget. If I told most businesspeople how little operating capital we started with, they’d all say don’t do it. But I knew I had to try, or I’d regret it for the rest of my life.
Those first few years, though. Whoo. Every unresolved issue in you gets tested when you strike out on your own. There were times we weren’t sure we’d make it, and I’d get smacked in the face with all my worst fears at once. Fear of failing. Fear of not being enough. Fear of financial instability, of not being able to take care of myself, of needing help. I was an emotional mess, full of dread.
Then, three years in, the pandemic hit. In a strange, real way, it was a kind of blessing. If we didn’t make it, this time there’d be a reason bigger than my own inadequacy. The whole world was facing the same wall I was facing. I wasn’t alone in it anymore, and that changed something. Instead of freezing up, I got inspired to adapt. There’s something about a shared fight that lets you stand up in a way a private one never quite does. Those years also solidified our purpose as a gathering place. People needed a way to stay connected, and we found a way to help them do that safely. That mattered then. It matters now.
We’ve hit rough patches since, and I’m sure we will again. But now I feel like I’ve got an army behind me, neighbors and team members as invested in this place’s survival as I am. That’s the real lesson in all of it. Survival is so much scarier when you think you’re alone. It’s hard to think creatively when it’s only your own neck on the line. But when you’re fighting for something bigger than yourself, that distance gives you room to stay calmer, think bigger, and find your way through.
I’m not carrying this by myself. I never really was.

Craft b**r is on the decline, and perhaps one of the strongest pieces of evidence of that notion is what’s going on in Colorado. The state is arguably one of the best in the US for breweries. In 2024, the state lost 41 breweries and saw b**r sales shrink, according to the Colorado Beverage Coalition, per KDVR.

The group revealed that sales were down more in Colorado than the national average. The state saw a 3.2% decrease compared to the 2% drop-off nationwide.
