Continuing Bike Month with a focus on commuting, let’s talk about building your route. If you’re new to commuting, welcome. The good news is it does not have to be complicated.

Building out the best commute has very little to do with fitness and everything to do with risk. The fastest route is not always going to be the safest, and the most direct road might not be the best choice.

When mapping your commute, look for low traffic roads, protected bike lanes or wider shoulders, and fewer high-conflict intersections. Tools like Metro and Heat Maps can help you find where cyclists are actually riding, and crash data from the Colorado Department of Transportation or Utah Department of Transportation will help you figure out where high-conflict intersections are.

It is worth adding a few extra minutes to your daily commute if it means fewer interactions with cars and more control over your riding experience.

Let’s chat about commuting and helmet laws in Colorado and Utah.

A lot of people find this surprising, but neither states have a statewide law requiring adult cyclists to wear a helmet. That means if you’re commuting, you’re generally not legally required to wear one.

But what about from a legal standpoint? In both states, not wearing a helmet typically does not determine fault in a crash. Liability still comes down to what caused the accident. But that doesn’t mean that it has no impact.

We all know the benefits of helmets. So it’s up to you to make the decision, protect the noggin’ or do not protect the noggin’.

However, some local jurisdictions may have rules for minors, so it is worth taking the time to know the specifics.

Would you guess that this is one of the most dangerous intersections for cyclists on the Front Range?

I’m standing here at Bellevue Ave and Colorow Dr — a place where I’ve handled MULTIPLE cases involving cyclists being hit by drivers turning left directly into their path.

Last September, a cyclist named Gerald Missel was killed here when a driver illegally failed to yield the right of way and struck him head-on.

After months of waiting, that driver is finally being sentenced after pleading guilty to reckless driving.

📍 Sentencing Hearing June 10 at 2:00 PM @ the Jefferson County Courthouse Room #330

If you’re able to attend, we’re asking people to come and support Gerri’s family. We hope to fill the courtroom and send a message that accountability matters — and that when a person drives recklessly and kills a cyclist, there should be meaningful consequences.

If you can’t be there in person, you can also write a letter to the Judge telling them why accountability matters. Send your letter to: [email protected]

Any support you can show is much appreciated.

One thing with commuting for me is that the weather doesn’t stop me! I actually love commuting in inclement weather because it’s much quieter and there is a peacefulness that can be found on the bike during a rain or snowstorm.

Rain, fog, snow, and wet roads reduce traction and make it harder for drivers to see cyclists. One of the best ways to protect yourself during inclement weather is to ride predictably and give yourself and the cars around you extra space and stopping distance.

Using front and rear lights, even during the day, can make a huge difference. Braking earlier and avoiding sudden turns helps create predictability for everyone on the road. Slick paint, wet leaves, and metal surfaces are sneaky and can take a wheel right out from under you if you are not careful and aware. Assuming drivers have limited visibility, even if they do not, helps keep you riding defensively and safely.

Getting to your destination is always more important than getting there quickly.

Let’s talk commuting and police reports. I’ve been asked this a lot. Should you file a police report after a crash with a driver while commuting?

Well, you don’t have to. But you probably should. If there are injuries or significant damage, you absolutely should. Even if it seems minor, it is still best practice to file one.

In Colorado and Utah, a report is typically required if there are injuries, a fatality, or significant property damage. But here is the reality. If you end up dealing with insurance or a legal claim, a police report is one of the most important pieces of documentation you can have.

No report means no clear record of what happened, which opens the door for disputes to happen.

When our day to day becomes routine, we don’t really think about the “what ifs”, and really, we should not have to.

A crash can come out of nowhere and happen fast, but what you do next matters a bunch. First, if you are injured, your priority is your safety and getting medical attention. These tips are for those who are able to document and respond at the scene.

The first few minutes can shape everything that follows, from how fault is determined to how a claim plays out.

Most people aren’t prepared for that moment, so think of this as your starting point. Swipe and save!

Super proud to support with a sponsorship of . The work they do is incredible and Davis is truly an inspiration.

Today’s ride was extra awesome because I got to ride with my good friend and Executive Director of , Chris McGee. Honestly I almost didn’t roll out of bed this morning due to a long week of work/travel and riding. But man was I glad to hear from Chris asking if I was riding - totally the motivation I needed.

There are plenty of local rides and events happening across the state, so hopefully you’re getting out there and joining in.

Have fun, stay safe, and make sure you are up to speed on your rights!

Yesterday, Senate Bill 26-072, a bill that will help hold dangerous drivers accountable who hit and kill other people, passed the House and was sent to the Governor for his signature. Many people worked tirelessly over many years (dating back to 2019) to help make this happen. Over this time, far too many lives have been lost. To all the families who have lost loved ones to traffic violence and worked tirelessly to pass this law, thank you! We are honored to stand with you to advocate for safe streets.

We’re also grateful to AAA Colorado, Bike Jeffco, MADD Colorado, Thewhiteline.org, and the law enforcement community. Your thought partnership and advocacy helped make this happen. Lastly, thank you to Senators John Carson and Marc Snyder for your leadership, and Representatives Cecilia Espinoza and Bob Marshal for shepherding the bill through the House.
