Advancement in show jumping often comes quickly—but what happens when ability doesn’t keep up?

A new opinion piece from The Chronicle of the Horse explores the hidden risks of moving riders and horses up the levels before the foundation is truly there. In a sport where safety and partnership matter most, progress should never come at the expense of proper development.

It raises an important question for our industry:
Are we prioritizing advancement… or ability?

Lease or sale—which is right for you?

While both options can help riders access top horses, they carry very different legal responsibilities and risks.

Understanding those differences before entering an agreement can save time, money, and stress later on.

📌 Every situation is unique, your contract should reflect that.

The horse world runs on trust—but trust alone won’t protect you if something goes wrong.

Handshake deals can lead to misunderstandings, unpaid invoices, and disputes that could have been avoided with a written agreement.

The question of how often horses should compete dominated the hunter/jumper conversation this year. In June, USEF opted for a position statement on overuse rather than hard numerical limits—a move that sparked mixed reactions. By December, preliminary data was shared at the USHJA Annual Meeting, keeping the debate very much alive.

In between, longtime Chronicle columnist Armand Leone called for a stronger stance, reminding the sport that “there is no union for horses,” and pointing out that most stakeholders benefit financially from horses competing more often.

A timely, necessary conversation—because the future of the sport depends on putting horse welfare first.
