If we simply got eligible smokers and former smokers screened at the rate the evidence supports, we'd prevent 62,110 lung cancer deaths and gain 872,270 life-years over just five years. Instead, only 20-25% of eligible adults were screened in 2024, and in some regions the rate falls below 10% — a gap that costs lives every single day. Low-dose CT screening is one of the most effective, most underused tools we have in oncology, yet awareness and referral patterns haven't caught up with the evidence. This data should be a wake-up call for primary care, health systems, and policymakers alike. Screening saves lives — we just have to get people through the door.

Lung Cancer Screenings in Eligible Patients Remain Low

Armand Leone, MD, JD, MBA, co-founder and leader of our medical malpractice practice, as well as a Board-Certified Diagnostic Radiologist, says: "Despite being available for over a decade, the number of patients eligible for lung cancer screening who actually get screened is dismally low.
