This week is national Radon Awareness Week and a good time to remember to encourage clients to have a radon test as part of their home inspections. Well water should also be tested as radon gas can infiltrate the water.

Radon is an odorless, colorless, and radioactive gas that naturally emanates from the earth. Outside, radon levels are generally low. Higher, and more dangerous, levels of radon can be found in homes and buildings. This is because radon can seep through cracks in the foundation and build up in the home.

According to the CDC:
• Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking.
• Approximately 21,000 people die each year from radon-caused lung cancer.
• 1 in 15 homes in the US have high levels of radon.
• The only way to know whether the radon level in a home is safe is to have it tested by a certified radon tester or purchase a radon test kit.
• If the radon level in the home is above 4.0 pCi/L, steps need to be taken to mitigate or reduce the radon level.

If a home has a high level of radon, contact a qualified specialist to explore the best options to reduce radon levels. Some common mitigation tools include:
• Increasing ventilation in the home;
• Installing a ventilation system;
• Sealing cracks in the foundation; and
• Installing a radon reduction system like a vent pipe and fan system to remove radon gas.
