California’s New Driver’s License and ID Cards: What Notaries Across the U.S. Need to Know
I would like to share some important news with notaries across the country, particularly California Notaries Public. Starting October 1, 2025, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will introduce a new design for driver’s licenses and identification cards.
These updated IDs will feature advanced security measures and a new look that showcases California’s iconic redwoods, poppies, and coastline. Additionally, the new design will include significant security upgrades that all notaries should be aware of.
According to the DMV, these updates include a digital security signature on one of the two barcodes on the back of the cards and the removal of the traditional magnetic strip. This redesign is the first major update since 2010, with additional changes made during the rollout of REAL ID requirements in 2018. The 2025 version continues the DMV’s dedication to making identification both secure and reliable.
While this update specifically pertains to California IDs, it is beneficial for notaries nationwide to be aware of these changes, as signers often present IDs issued by their home state in other states. By staying informed about such updates and understanding what a valid ID should look like, notaries can better identify false identifications, maintain the integrity of the notarization process, protect the public, defend themselves against potential fraud, and uphold the highest standards of professional notary services. It is also important to note that, according to the California DMV, current California driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration dates. As a result, notaries should expect to see both the old and new versions for several years to come.
Understanding that both designs are acceptable helps prevent confusion when verifying a signer’s identity. Additionally, keep in mind that having an ID-checking guidebook will help notaries use it as a reliable source.
I hope this information helps Notaries Public for the next time they are presented with the new version of the California Driver's License or identification card.
