Many couples implemented separate trusts known as A/B or marital/family trusts when the federal estate tax was lower than the current $11.4 million per person. These trusts are proving cumbersome when the first spouse passes away. If you have this trust scheme you may want to have it reviewed by an attorney to determine if it is still necessary.
