A great vacation rental photo should make you want to be there.

This Tempe Airbnb project was one of the most collaborative vacation rental shoots I’ve worked on.

The client is an experienced Airbnb arbitrage operator and digital marketing executive who already understood exactly what he wanted the property to communicate.

He knew the audience.

He knew the marketing strategy.

The photography needed to bring it all together.

We worked through the property with the guest experience in mind, looking at which spaces, amenities, details, and views would matter most to someone deciding whether to book.

The result was a visual story designed to make the property easier to understand, more memorable, and more desirable before a guest ever arrives.

A great vacation rental photo should make you want to be there.

Scottsdale after dark stops the scroll.

This 10,000+ SF custom home was built for entertaining, and once the sun went down, the property really came alive.

Marco LoPesio & Nico LoPesio understood exactly what this home needed to look like.

Pool. Fire features. Water features. Architectural lighting. And a whole-home “night mode” that completely changed the mood inside.

So we kept shooting.

The result: some of my favorite frames from this property, and several of the images the listing agent chose to lead with in the marketing.

Some of the most rewarding spaces to photograph are the ones where architecture, materials, lighting, and craftsmanship all come together.

These are a few of my favorite custom bathrooms from recent Arizona projects. Each one has a different combination of stone, tile, millwork, plumbing fixtures, natural light, and architectural detail, but they all share something I look for when photographing custom homes: the details deserve to be seen.

For custom home builders, architects, and interior designers, photography is an important part of documenting the finished work and communicating the quality behind the design.

The same attention to composition and light carries into luxury real estate, vacation rental, and hospitality photography, where thoughtful spaces need to translate just as well on screen as they do in person.

The target guest should influence how a vacation rental is photographed.

I recently photographed a home in the Troon area of North Scottsdale for an Airbnb management company working to attract more medium-term guests.

Because of HOA requirements in the neighborhood, the property’s marketing strategy placed greater emphasis on longer stays. That meant the photography needed to show more than a collection of attractive rooms.

I focused on the features that help someone imagine living in the home for weeks or months: four bedrooms, a large kitchen, laundry, generous living space, and a private landscaped yard.

Every property has a different story to tell. Understanding the client’s marketing strategy before the shoot helps determine which parts of that story deserve the most visual attention.

Arizona Short Term Rental Q&A

Q: How often should Airbnb photos be updated?

A: Vacation rental photography should be refreshed whenever the property changes in a meaningful way or when the existing images no longer represent the guest experience.

Why this matters

New furnishings, renovations, updated landscaping, added amenities, and seasonal improvements all influence how guests perceive a property. Outdated photographs can create inaccurate expectations.

How I approach it

Rather than replacing every image, I often recommend photographing the improvements that have the greatest impact on bookings while maintaining a consistent look throughout the gallery.

A North Scottsdale Airbnb owner recently contacted me to refresh their photos for 2 reasons: 1. New, fresh furnishings that changed the whole "feel" of the listing. and 2. A re-strategization of their marketing to reflect a more "family-friendly" space to attract more long-term guests at higher rates.

Properties in Arizona frequently invest in outdoor living improvements such as shade structures, landscaping, putting greens, pickleball courts, and resort-style pools. Those additions deserve updated photography.

A: Most vacation rentals benefit from a complete gallery that helps guests understand the entire experience, rather than focusing only on the property's best features.

Guests make booking decisions based on confidence. A well-photographed listing allows them to understand the layout, sleeping arrangements, amenities, outdoor spaces, and overall atmosphere before they reserve. A complete visual story also helps answer questions that might otherwise prevent someone from booking.

How I approach it

I photograph a property with the guest journey in mind. Beyond wide room photos, I capture the details that communicate comfort, flow, and lifestyle. The goal is to create a gallery that feels intentional and gives potential guests a clear understanding of what they'll experience during their stay.

Sometimes an Airbnb owner must step out of their perspective to understand what guests find attractive about an Airbnb listing. That is why I stress the importance of showing off the surroundings and local attractions with drone photography.

Arizona Perspective
Many Arizona vacation rentals include outdoor amenities that are available year-round. Pools, covered patios, mountain views, and outdoor dining areas often deserve as much attention as the interior spaces.

Q:Why does twilight photography help vacation rentals?

A: Twilight photography showcases a vacation rental during one of the most inviting times of day, highlighting outdoor living spaces and creating an emotional connection with potential guests.

Why this matters

Evening is when many travelers imagine relaxing by the pool, enjoying dinner on the patio, or gathering around outdoor seating. Twilight imagery captures that atmosphere in a way daytime photography cannot.

How I approach it

Twilight sessions are carefully timed so the interior lighting, landscape lighting, pool lighting, and evening sky all work together. The best images often happen during a brief window when everything is balanced naturally.

From the Field
At a home I photographed in Chandler for VRBO, the owner described the beautiful sunsets she enjoys while sitting in her backyard and really wanted to capture that moment. In doing so, I suggested a twilight photoshoot separate from the interiors so that we could show two different moments in time. The sky showed off that night while the pool and outdoor lighting provided the ambiance to create the perfect scene for photos.

Arizona's outdoor lifestyle makes twilight photography especially effective for luxury vacation rentals featuring pools, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and mountain views.

Twilight photography can become one of the most memorable parts of a vacation rental gallery.
