Happy Day of Caring! Day of Caring is the region's largest community volunteer event, held annually, in Livingston, Monroe, Genesee, Wayne, Ontario, and Wyoming counties. We got to spend our morning at Camp Stella Maris helping them prepare for the very busy summer they have ahead of them - Painting cabins, mulching, and counting/hanging inventory in their camp store. Thanks for having us!

This week the Public Defender's Office is welcoming our new investigator, Dustin Clark! Dustin is a Florida Gulf Coast University graduate, where he obtained his master's degree in criminal justice. Originally attending for business, he quickly decided criminal justice was the career path for him as it allowed him to make a difference in people's lives. With 10 years of experience as a criminal defense investigator, he has obtained a board certification in criminal defense investigations, served as the Florida Public Defender Association Investigations Committee Chair for 2 years, and managed training and development for investigators and attorneys in a five-county judicial circuit. His favorite thing about working in public service is the reward that comes with assisting clients in need with navigating the justice system, he is looking forward to expanding upon the office's capabilities in investigating cases. He believes everyone deserves a voice in court, and a team behind them that can work their case as thoroughly as possible. When Dustin is not working, he enjoys hiking with his wife, daughter, and goldendoodle; Recently moving to New York from Florida, they are excited to further explore Letchworth State Park. His personal goals for 2026 include discovering new fishing spots in the area and working on his bowling skills - he has had three perfect 300 games, and a three game high series of 837. Welcome to the team, Dustin!

Dan, Madisyn, and Meghan participated in NYSDA's Practical DWI Detection & Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instruction Course last week in Albany! Instructed by John Sandle and Jonathan Cohn, this CLE educates attorneys about field sobriety testing, law enforcement requirements and training for DWI arrests, and gives them the opportunity to participate in live DWI stop simulations. Here's a photo of them with their certificates, and owner/chief investigator of Sand Investigations, John Sandle!

Last Friday we had the pleasure of volunteering for the second year at Teresa House, painting and doing some spring cleanup. Teresa House is a nonprofit end-of-life comfort care facility in Geneseo that has been operating for the last 33 years, relying primarily on volunteers and community donations. They provide an intimate, "home like" environment with 24/7 care to their patients and families in their final stages of life - at no cost to them. We always look forward to being able to help support such an awesome organization; Visit their website below if you are interested in donating or volunteering!

April is child abuse prevention month; The Child Advocacy Center of Greater Rochester is hosting the two-day Northeast Child Abuse Conference at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, and Melissa is there representing our office! Looks like she's already making a lot of great connections, one being with one of the therapy dogs from RocDog.🐾

Behind the attorneys that represent you in court we have a diverse group of women that keep the office running smoothly. From client conversations and questions to transportation requests; Medical records, sewing suit jackets, answering emails, laptop problems, building and closing files, remembering birthdays, managing calendars, and beyond. Thank you Sandy, Heidi, Chaney, Erin, and Melissa for everything you do!

FACT OR FICTION? 🤔

"Public Defenders do not care about their clients, or their cases outcome."

THIS IS FICTION!

Public Defenders juggle higher caseloads than most private attorneys, making clients feel like they are not a priority or their assigned attorneys "don't care." Despite having multiple active cases, they are dedicated to protecting the constitutional rights of each individual client and have an ethical obligation to provide the best defense possible, despite any personal or systemic constraints. While they may not be in touch with you every day throughout the timeline of your case, they are constantly working to obtain the best outcome available for each and every case; And celebrating those wins when they come!
