Our criminal mitigation specialist, Erin, had the opportunity to attend the Forensic Social Work Alliance Conference in New Orleans in May. The FSWA focus' on improving networking for professionals, providing resources and encouraging professional development through education, and advocating for programs and policies that promote social, racial, economic and environmental justice and equality - specifically for families, individuals, and communities impacted by the legal system. Erin deep dives into the lives of our clients, helping them successfully navigate the criminal justice system as well as their day to day while being involved in it, making this a very beneficial training for her to be able to participate in. One of the keynote speakers at the conference was Helen Prejean from "Dead Man Walking," and Erin really appreciated a quote she shared: “Everyone is worth more than the worst thing they have ever done.”

Thank you to the Forensic Social Work Alliance for hosting!

Meghan and Madisyn participated in a 7-day Basic Trial Skills CLE in Albany earlier this month. Organized by NYSDA, the training is a combination of lectures and practice labs covering all of the steps involved in a jury trial including; Interviews and collaborations, client centered theory and theme development, narrative persuasion, jury selection, opening statements, cross examination, impeachment, and closing arguments. Throughout the week, community members made up the group of jurors and local actors played the roles of clients and witness', allowing the attorneys to simulate a full criminal trial. Madisyn said she was very grateful for the opportunity and felt participating would really help improve her litigation skills, as well as build connections with other defense attorneys in NYS. This week the Public Defender's Office is welcoming our new investigator, Dustin Clark! Dustin is a Florida Gulf Coast University graduate, where he obtained his master's degree in criminal justice. Originally attending for business, he quickly decided criminal justice was the career path for him as it allowed him to make a difference in people's lives. With 10 years of experience as a criminal defense investigator, he has obtained a board certification in criminal defense investigations, served as the Florida Public Defender Association Investigations Committee Chair for 2 years, and managed training and development for investigators and attorneys in a five-county judicial circuit. His favorite thing about working in public service is the reward that comes with assisting clients in need with navigating the justice system, he is looking forward to expanding upon the office's capabilities in investigating cases. He believes everyone deserves a voice in court, and a team behind them that can work their case as thoroughly as possible. When Dustin is not working, he enjoys hiking with his wife, daughter, and goldendoodle; Recently moving to New York from Florida, they are excited to further explore Letchworth State Park. His personal goals for 2026 include discovering new fishing spots in the area and working on his bowling skills - he has had three perfect 300 games, and a three game high series of 837. Welcome to the team, Dustin!
