McLeod, Alexander, Powel & Apffel, P.C., is proud to announce that, effective January 1, 2026, John W. Drewry has become an officer with the firm. John joined MAPA in August 2018 after having practiced for five years handling a docket ranging from commercial maritime to immigration matters. He has proved to be a hard worker with a commonsense approach to all his cases and an ability to handle effectively a large docket. We are pleased John agreed to accept our offer to become a firm officer, and we and our clients are better for it.

John and his wife Tsveti reside in Galveston with their children, John and Eleanor. We welcome them all to the MAPA family!

With sorrow, the firm announces the passing of the last of its founding partners, Benjamin Rush Powel, II. Ben died in Galveston on September 2, 2025, at the age of 93 years. After completing his law degree at the University of Texas School of Law in 1959, he moved to Galveston and joined the firm of McLeod, Mills, Shirley & Alexander. When the firm dissolved in late 1964, he co-founded the firm of McLeod, Alexander, Powel & Apffel P.C., and remained with the firm until his retirement. During his time with the firm, he served as, among other things, General Attorney for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company and General Counsel to the Port of Galveston.

Congratulations to David Parke Salyer and Bryan Lasswell! After a two and a half year wait the Texas Court of Appeals (First District) affirmed the jury’s verdict and trial court’s take-nothing judgment in their multi-million dollar case defending French boat manufacturer, Fountaine Pajot.
