Ryland Keefe is fully qualified to play college football, but a routine medical check just shattered his opportunity to play collegiate football and excel.
Since he was 5 years old, Ryland has poured his soul into football. He possesses a rare, natural talent that quickly turned him into a dominant force at Outside Linebacker and Defensive End.
His relentless work ethic earned him All-County, All-Region, and All-State honors. He became the first player in 13 years from SCHS to achieve this level of prestige since former NFL player Josh Malone.
Ryland did everything right. He maintained excellent grades, always focused on doing good, and pushed through unimaginable physical adversity. For three years, he battled severe sinus issues that left him unable to breathe through his nose, yet he never missed a single game. We finally got his sinuses fixed, and he is breathing properly again.
However, the pressure from those severe sinus issues and not being able to breathe had already caused the initial damage to his eardrum.
His excellence on the field and in the classroom earned him multiple Division 1 offers. His ultimate dream has always been football, excelling at the sport he loves, and doing good. He chose to accept a commitment to The United States Air Force Academy to push himself to the absolute limit.
Getting into a military service academy is a grueling process. Our family rushed to do everything required:
* Ryland took extra high school classes to meet requirements.
* He fought through a grueling physical fitness test, forced to take it pretty quickly after a major surgery, which made it extremely hard.
* We successfully navigated the massive academy application process.
* He underwent surgery in January 2026 to repair his ear.
* The surgery was thought to be a success, despite leaving him with minor hearing loss. He passed his initial medical screenings. Two weeks ago, a tympanic membrane test showed his eardrum was fully intact.
* On May 12, he went in for a final, routine repeat test. Before the procedure even started, the medic looked into his ear and delivered a crushing blow: his surgery had failed. The graft failed, and they found a 60% hole in his eardrum.
* A perforated eardrum is an automatic, non- medical disqualification for the United s military academies. In a matter of two seconds Ryland watched his scholarship, his D1 all offer, and his dreams vanish.
We are not angry, and we are not looking to place blame. We are just a heartbroken family watching a fiercely dedicated young man face an unfair twist of fate. We respect the tough medical guidelines.
