Tennessee is closing a major loophole that allowed drivers to get license plates without showing proof of insurance or legal identification. Two new state laws are now changing how vehicles get registered in the state.

Lawanda Page, who lost her son Chazan in a hit-and-run in 2024, has been pushing for these reforms. “There needs to be some type of way to make sure we help hold people accountable,” she said.

HB 1690, sponsored by Rep. Tim Hicks, now requires proof of insurance to register a car. Penalties jump from $25 to $500 for uninsured drivers, and repeat violations within three years can result in fines up to $1,500 and registration suspension. This law takes effect July 1, 2027.

HB 1708 requires proof of lawful U.S. status to register a vehicle. A Tennessee driver’s license or state photo ID counts as proof. This law takes effect January 1, 2027.

Not everyone agrees with the changes. Undocumented immigrants say they need vehicles to get to work, and advocates argue the laws limit access for those who need it most.

Many of our clients have received citations for Ma*****na possession only to have their cases dismissed upon showing proof that their possession was a hemp-derived product, lawfully purchased at a smoke shop or gas station.

Starting July 1, the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission will begin enforcing a 2025 law that effectively will ban THCA and similar popular hemp-derived products.

It is important to spread the word that in counties, especially the ones that touch Davidson County, law enforcement agencies and the prosecutors will be cracking down on that simple possession charge. If you need representation, we are a phone call away - 615-630-8499

In the last year I have had a handful of these cases in juvenile court and this bill passage greatly pleases me…. Common sense here people!!

SCHOOL THREATS: A bill (HB1273/SB0591) specifying that school officials are only legally required to report threats of mass violence they deem credible passed both chambers with unanimous support. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin) and Rep. Clay Doggett (R-Pulaski), is meant to avoid cases in which students, including some with disabilities, are expelled and criminally charged for making verbal threats they have no ability to carry out. Metro Nashville Public Schools saw nearly four times as many students arrested for threats during the 2024-2025 school year compared to previous years following recent changes in state law. Haile told the Senate Judiciary Committee that a 5th-grade student with disabilities in his district was convicted of a felony, put on probation and moved to homebound instruction after making a threatening comment “in a moment of frustration.”
