Telling your children about divorce can be very daunting. Here are some tips from the The Center For Divorce Education:
Choose the right time and place- time where you will have no interruptions and a place that is calm and familiar to your children.
Prepare yourself emotionally for the conversation and be ready to handle their reactions- patience and empathy on your part is essential.
Both parents should be present (if possible)- this provides a united front that reassures the children that both parents will continue to be involved and love them.
Explain divorce honestly to your children-use age appropriate language to explain to them what is a divorce.
Manage emotional reactions- acknowledge their feelings and provide comfort - what they are feeling is normal.
Provide continuous reassurance- remind them that they are loved and the divorce is not their fault.
