Trying to co-parent, tension at child exchanges, conflicts in schedules - often areas of stressors for parents and their children. The best way to deal with these problems is to have a healthy co-parenting plan. Make sure your plan includes:
1. Setting healthy co-parenting boundaries- define communication methods, set specific times to discuss parenting issues, respect each other's personal time and space
2. Work together to plan special occasions for your child. Show your child that you both are committed to making their day happy.
3. Both parents should attend the child's school events, sporting events. You are showing a united front for your child.
4. Handle holidays with advanced communication- how will the time be shared, available to be flexible if the need arises.

Your plan should be as detailed as possible - this will help keep misunderstandings and confusion to a minimum. Communication is key!

With your Senior getting ready to graduate, thoughts naturally turn to their next step - whether it is a trade school or college. Your 18 year-old "babies" are now adults. As adults, parents no longer have the legal right to make medical and financial decisions for them. If you have a Senior who is headed off to college or trade school or just moving away from home, make sure that you have the legal authority to make decisions for them in the event they are unable to. Financial and medical powers of attorney can give you the comfort to know you can act as their legal agent if needed. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment for you and your young adult to come in and visit with us.

“Children are highly tuned in to their parents’ emotional states. When you’re stressed, you may be less present and more reactive. Kids often internalize this, feeling they did something wrong or that they’re not important. Their cortisol levels rise, which makes it harder for them to concentrate or manage emotions. Cortisol can stay elevated in a child’s body for up to 72 hours, so one argument at home can impact their focus and mood for several days.”
