The Social Security Administration has announced that all of the local field offices will be open beginning Thursday, April 7, 2022. Appointments are not required, but the Administration recommends them as long lines are likely to be encountered. SSA has temporarily rehired some recent retirees as well as sent staff from headquarters, but urges everyone to be patient as two years of closure will require some time to rectify.

Social Security is aiming to have most of the field offices open to the public by March 30, 2022. I know this will come as a relief to many of us. In the meantime, SSA is still available by phone. We do NOT recommend contacting the national hotline (the 1213 number) as wait times are lengthy and you will usually get better information from your local office.
