We have felt the impact of the government shut down regarding Social Security. Much slower response time due to, apparently, fewer agents working. Wait times when calling offices have been very lengthy. Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon.

Social Security offices nationwide will continue to offer "reduced services" until the government shutdown is over. Here's what that means for you.

“I don’t have health insurance and I can’t afford to go
to the doctor”

We hear this statement frequently when we conduct an intake with individuals applying - or wanting to apply - for SSI or SSDI.

We advise individuals to, at the very least, be seen at their local health department. This is to stay on top of their healthcare needs and medical records are
the evidence in a disability claim.

The office will remain closed and we are working from home. Mr. Whitesell is periodically checking the fax machine and voicemail. Our building is just a little too chilly for prolonged stays right now.

What is a “Superbug”?

You’ve likely heard this term on more than one occasion. A superbug is a name given to harmful bacteria that have developed resistance to drugs used to treat them. However, not all superbugs are created equal. The degree of the superbug is determined by the number of different antibiotics to which the strain has become resistant.

While representing claimants in pursuit for disability benefits we have dealt with a number of individuals with MRSA - Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This is one of the more commonly known “superbugs”. In most instances, MRSA lives harmlessly on the skin, nasal passages etc. The concern is when it enters the bloodstream through open wound and the subject has a weakened immune system.

According to the CDC, the following are some steps individuals should follow to protect against infection:

-good hygiene - washing hands thoroughly, using clean and/or disposable towels
-avoiding misuse of antibiotics (such as taking antibiotics for viral infections or not finishing all of the medicine as prescribed)
-Take special precautions around animals
-practice safe food preparation
-seek medical care immediately
-keep wounds clean
-take good care of yourself if you have a chronic illness if you suspect an infection

*always consult with a medical professional for any questions or concerns regarding antibiotic resistance infections or health concerns.

People with liver disease may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Liver disease is a broad medical term that encompasses a multitude of disorders, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and hemochromatosis. Scarring of the liver can occur and be severe enough that the liver is unable to properly function. This can be life threatening. For this disorder to be considered for disability, chronic liver disease must last at least six months or have a diagnosis of end-stage liver disease. Additionally, there must be related side effects, such as peritoneal fluid buildup or hemorrhaging. These symptoms make activities of daily living very difficult.

Are you or someone you know unable to work due to liver disease? If you’re considering filing a disability claim, Whitesell Law Office offers a free telephone consultation.
