All of us are saddened to learn of the death of Mimi’s father, Jerry Kaiz. He was a truly good and kind man. We have had many times over the years to share a laugh and some pie. He will be missed—but he leaves a wonderful legacy in Mimi and the rest of his family. May his memory be a blessing.

A change in Maryland law will be in effect on June 1 2023. Children who suffer abuse may sue their abusers without worrying about the statute of limitations. There is research to show that children who are abused often don't process the abuse until they are in their 50s...certainly most don't have the emotional or financial resources to take legal action at 18. This is not a solution to the horrible problem of the abuse of children but it is a step in the right direction.

We lost our best friend this week. I’m sure he would want everyone to know that it was his time to go but that the years he spent at the office were his best years. He provided love and caring to us and set an example of compassion that we will attempt to emulate. We will miss you Waldo.

It is a New Year, with new challenges and we hope positive changes. We start the year with the Courts in Maryland and our office impacted by Covid. At present, many trials are being continued (we will contact you if this changes anything about your case) and the Court is operating with reduced staff. Speaking of reduced staff ---our support staff is going to be reduced until March. We anticipate that allowing some time for rest and recovery will allow us to be a full strength then but for right now please be understanding. All law firms are reliant on their staff and Conklyn & Kemp is so fortunate to have people who have been with us for over twenty years---and if giving a short break allows us to have them for twenty more years we are happy to do so!

Child support guidelines which were to be changed in October are now not going to be changed until July 1, 2022. The change involves high income cases. If the combined gross income of both parents exceeds $15,000 a month, right now the Court has discretion as to how much to award. After next July the threshold for the Court's discretion will be $30,000 a month combined gross income. There will also be a change with regard how the Court establishes child support if a parent in unemployed. Changes in the child support calculations don't happen often--Maryland has used guidelines for 30 years and adjustments have only been made twice--and the Court will not modify support regardless of the change unless someone asks the Court to do so. Child support establishment or modification ONLY backdates to the date you asked the Court for a change.
