The “Wilson” in Wilson & Scholz has always meant more than a name on the door.
John P. “Phil” Wilson built this practice over the course of nearly five decades. He built it the way he practiced law: with experience, persistence, a healthy dose of stubbornness, and a genuine commitment to the people who trusted him to represent them.
Those of us who knew Phil also know that no professional biography could ever quite capture him. He was sharp, funny, ornery, generous, and unmistakably Phil. He might finish a hearing, step outside with his pipe, and then somehow decide a cigarette was also necessary. He had opinions, usually wasn't shy about sharing them, and had accumulated enough years in court that there was very little he hadn't seen before.
But underneath all of that was a formidable lawyer who knew his craft cold and cared deeply about the people he represented. For more than 34 years, Phil served as the public defender in Johnson Circuit Court. Generations of clients had him standing beside them when they needed a lawyer, and generations of attorneys in Johnson County had the experience of practicing with him or against him.
Even after he began trying to retire, Phil remained part of this office. His knowledge, his stories, his habits, and more than a little of his personality became part of its fabric.
When the practice passed into new hands, Phil's name stayed.
It stayed because this firm did not begin with Wilson & Scholz. It began with Phil in 1974, and everything we do today rests in some measure on what he spent all those years building. We are enormously proud to carry his name forward.
More than that, we are grateful we got to know the man whose name is on the door.
Our hearts are with Jenn, Julie, John, Mike, and the entire Wilson family.
We will miss you, Phil.
