Probate is the court process for settling someone’s estate, including paying debts and distributing assets. A revocable living trust can help your family avoid that process for assets properly placed in the trust. Signing the trust is step one. It's not the last step.

"People tend to think that once you sign a trust document, all the assets are automatically put in there. But there's actually a lot of work that has to go into placing those assets into the trust — and that's done after you've created the trust."
