A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT//PLEASE SHARE
I have received 3 calls this week from people who have been contacted by phone telling them that they owe fines to the US Federal Court because they missed jury duty and had signed a notice which promised they would attend.
Apparently, the caller represents that he is with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office. They also give bogus citation numbers.
I followed up with the coordinator for jury matters at our Federal Court and had a wonderful conversation with the representative. She confirmed it was a scam that it sometimes also involves identity theft. She told
me that one woman lost $14,000 in the scam. It is a sophisticated cheat that preys on people who think they are doing the right thing and following the law.
I hope Karma works quickly on those perpetrators.
