Landen Hare is a vintage and antique collector in Williamstown, Ky., focused on religious history. Recently, he purchased an 1881 Bible.

And what does this have to do with Cantey Hanger?

Tucked inside the Bible was a photo. "I believed the photo was from 1882 and was in the back of the Bible a year or so after 'William and Samuel' acquired it," Landen wrote. "Maybe as safe-keeping or a good luck superstition sort of thing."

Landen was curious who William and Samuel were and why they were in a room full of law books. With the use of AI and Google Lens to take photos -- and after multiple failed attempts of it just saying it was a Victorian-style photo -- he tried a close-up of their faces. After many attempts, it was able to identify them as William Capps and Samuel Benton Cantey.

He did more digging and sent an inquiry to the Cantey Hanger page last Saturday. "I got back confirmation almost immediately," Landen said. Landen had found a photo very similar to two others the firm has in its historical files.

In his research, Landen found that William Capps was deeply rooted in the local civic life of Fort Worth with his wife, Sallie. They eventually purchased the famous Queen Anne Victorian Pollock-Capps House. As for Samuel Benton Cantey, he was born in Alabama to a Confederate general and graduated from Auburn in 1880. He then moved to Texas to be admitted to the bar by a special act from the Texas Legislature in 1881, where he partnered with Capps. That partnership eventually became Cantey and Hanger.

Thank you, Landen. The firm is approaching its 145th year and this is icing on the cake.

Arbitration is when the parties hire a private person to resolve a dispute. Arbitration has proven to be an effective way to resolve disputes privately, promptly and economically. AAA Arbitrators have experience resolving commercial disputes and can work on the parties' schedules. Sebastian Whitaker once suffered a collapsed lung while slalom waterskiing. As a summer clerk at Cantey Hanger, he has been a breath of fresh air.

Sebastian, in his first year at The University of Texas School of Law, was connected to UT grad and Partner Michael Appleman, and eventually to Jordan Parker, who runs our summer clerk and extern programs.

His interest in the law was a result of his passion for reading and writing. And why Cantey Hanger?

“I was very interested in coming to Fort Worth. Being from Lubbock, Fort Worth still seems like a big city, but it doesn’t feel as crowded as Austin and Dallas”

The interview with Jordan must have gone well. “I have done most of my work for Jordan (healthcare law), but I have had the opportunity to work with a number of the attorneys,” Sebastian said.

“I’ve learned a lot about healthcare law. It’s unsurprising to me that people need lawyers to understand it.”

In his free time, Sebastian plays golf and basketball and reads westerns.

Appeals in family law cases are uncommon, making a successful result at the appellate level especially noteworthy.

Congratulations to Partner Lyndsay Newell -- celebrating her five-year anniversary with the firm this month -- on recently securing a favorable memorandum opinion in a divorce case for her client from the Second Court of Appeals.

The Court affirmed the trial court's judgment, overruling each of the other side’s appellate issues, including challenges to the division of property and the award of attorney's fees.

A key component of the successful appeal occurred during the trial. The wife attempted to amend her pleadings, after the deadline passed, to assert additional fault grounds for divorce, but Lyndsay successfully objected and preserved those objections for appellate review. Preserving the record at trial is essential to defending a judgment on appeal, and without it, this favorable appellate outcome would not have been possible.

Effective family law trial advocacy requires more than presenting evidence; it demands a thorough understanding of the Texas Rules of Evidence, the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and the Texas Rules of Appellate Procedure. Lyndsay's command of those rules was the difference in a successful outcome for her client.

Brooke DeCavitte wanted to be a doctor, specifically a cardiologist, but a passion for critical thinking and writing were things she couldn’t ignore. “I always knew I wanted to pursue a challenging career,” Brooke says, “and when I discovered health law was an option, I was hooked. It combines my two passions.”

She is getting a chance to learn healthcare law working with Partners Jordan Parker and Leda Juengerman as a Cantey Hanger summer clerk. Brooke is about to begin her third year at the University of Houston Law Center after having attended Auburn University, where she earned a degree in what else … Healthcare Administration.

Brooke says Cantey Hanger checked more than the healthcare box for her clerkship. “Not only does it provide the opportunity to pursue my dream job, there are a multitude of practice areas that will allow me to push myself and keep learning something new every day.

“I have been pleasantly surprised that Cantey Hanger offers its young associates opportunities to try cases alongside partners and apply their courtroom skills early on.”

No use trying to argue that you are summer clerk Tori Davis' bestie. She has one, since birth. "My twin sister truly is my built-in best friend."

Attorneys and staff certainly did their best to befriend Tori. "I had the opportunity to work with many Partners and associates across different practice areas, which has been incredible. All, including staff, have been helpful, encouraging and wonderful to work with," Tori said. "I worked more closely with Sara Norman on trust and estate matters."

Tori attends Texas A&M University School of Law ("Gig 'em!" she said) and was interested in clerking with Cantey Hanger because she wants to stay in the city and because the "firm has played an integral role in the business and civic community for generations. "I was excited for the opportunity to learn from and work alongside attorneys who are actively involved in the community."

When not studying, Tori enjoys walking the Trinity Trails, spending time with family and friends and trying out new recipes.

Summer clerk Hugh Londrey, entering his third year at the
The University of Mississippi School of Law, said he enjoyed his time with the firm, but might have a backup plan to law.

"I was almost in an Oscar-winning movie when I was 9," he says. "I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and they shot the movie 'Lincoln' there and decided to have local kids try out for the part of Abraham's son, Tadd Lincoln. They liked me in the first round and I got to read for the part. They went with an actor instead of a local kid, but it was still a really cool experience."

His interest in the law has been built upon "the idea of helping others." He said it is very rewarding to work with people and help solve their problems.

Cantey Hanger was a top choice to gain experience this summer. "I went to TCU – Texas Christian University for my undergraduate degree and fell in love with Fort Worth, so I was determined to come back here to practice law. As I was researching firms, I was immediately interested in Cantey Hanger. I liked the types of law practiced, the culture, and I was fascinated by its long history in the area."

He was pleased by his summer stay. "Everyone was so supportive. Everybody was always so happy to help out with anything I was working on and give their input, which I really appreciated. And the work was incredibly rewarding."

Before attending law school at the University of Houston, Casey O'Neill was a West Point - The U.S. Military Academy graduate, serving more than seven years as a combat helicopter pilot and a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. While a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot-in-command, he completed two combat deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom, receiving numerous awards, including Air Medal and Joint Service Commendation Medal.
