Today I was able to help my client through the legal process in the Probate Court. Losing someone you love is one of the most stressful and painful events you can experience. The sadness and anger can feel crippling, and we don’t always allow ourselves the time to really grieve.

As the executor of an estate, you may be navigating this difficult emotional experience while simultaneously trying to handle the details of a probate process. I consider it a privilege to help families through the probate process and this difficult journey.

I am so humbled to be the ECL Attorney Spotlight. There are some moments that are so painful that it will change your entire projectile of your life and give you a purpose. The struggles I faced as a single parent who faced homelessness and poverty did not define me but taught me instead to be stronger, resourceful and resilient. My path to becoming an attorney was long and hard, but I am thankful for the road bumps on my journey. I share my story so that others can be encouraged. I am so thankful for the people who poured into my life and gave me a hand up. I am so excited to be doing what I love and blessed to be where I am today.

It was so rewarding to hear the joy and excitement in my clients voices when I told them that the Judge signed the order granting their expungement today. Their roadblocks and obstacles have been removed and their criminal records will be erased.

A weight has been lifted today for over 800 individuals who had their criminal records expunged in the 5th Annual Dallas County Expunction Expo. The Expo identifies people who may have Dallas County criminal offenses eligible to be legally cleared from their record and then matches them with attorneys who volunteer their time. For example, if individuals were arrested but never charged, or a certain amount of time has gone by, or there case would not be prosecuted. People who have been found not guilty, people who may have finished certain programs under the law are eligible for an expunction.

An expunction, which clears a person’s criminal record in certain cases, can be life-changing for people looking for a job, apartment or applying to school. There is nothing more important to your professional reputation than your permanent record. Almost every potential employer will conduct a background investigation of some kind before you are hired.

I am so glad that I was able to volunteer my services to help change my clients future. So many community leaders, judges, attorneys and volunteers came together outside their traditional roles to help with this restorative move that has helped so many in our community. I am so thankful to be able to help with an expo that is so impactful to the community and an individual's life.

Today I was able to successfully resolve my first mediation for the Justice of the Peace Court Precinct 4. The court allowed me to mediate the case today at the courthouse through a new dispute resolution pilot program. Now two parties will be able to move on with their lives without the pain of further litigation. This successfull resolution will save the parties alot of time, stress and money.

I recently received my mediation certification in a intensive 40-hour course designed to develop mediation and conflict resolution skills. I look forward to continuing to help parties to mediate and allow parties to work cooperatively toward a settlement or fair resolution of their disputes.

I am so excited to announce that I have been accepted into the Dallas Bar Association’s attorney incubator program, “Entrepreneurs in Community Lawyering”. I am so blessed to be invited into this program and I humbly acknowledge that this is a rare and unique opportunity knowing that other candidates were just as qualified but were not accepted. With the support of the Dallas Bar ECL program, over the next year, I will receive extensive business development training; On-going coaching by dedicated solo/small firm practitioners; Additional one-on-one mentoring by lawyers in successful specialized practices; Networking and business development opportunities. My passion in starting my own practice will allow me the flexibility and opportunity to help others with dedicated, compassionate, legal services.
