You should have received your updated property assessment and tax statements. Fun stuff! I don't know anyone who didn't have an increase. I sure did 🫣

While it's nice to know that your property is appreciating, no one wants to pay more in taxes.
If you feel your assessment is too high, there is an appeal process. I have done it myself and helped lots of other homeowners with theirs.

If you submit an appeal and it is denied, they cannot raise your assessment. So the worst case is you learn a little more about your home's value and your taxes stay the same for the year. Best case, they may amend your assessed value and you save some money!

-SW Fort Wayne (though doesn't have to be SWACS), 4 beds, 2000sf+, established/older neighborhood, basement preferred, under $415k.

-SWACS, 3 beds, under $275k.

-Older home in 46802 or 46807 area, historic vibes, under $375k.

Hot take: homeownership truly isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t make financial sense for everyone, and it may not fit your plans or lifestyle. There’s nothing wrong with renting. But it can be easy to get accustomed to renewing that lease every year and just never making the step to owning.

Do you know what home maintenance items you should be looking out for on heavy snow days?

- Keep an eye on your ceilings for stains. Sometimes it's the first sign of a roof leak which can happen with snow just as much as rain!

- Make sure your roof is melting and draining properly. If you start to see icicles forming or a buildup of ice in your gutters, you could experience ice dams which are incredibly damaging. You can rake the roof if reachable. Please know that most snow melt products are not safe for asphalt shingles.

- Check any exterior exhaust points, and keep them clear. This includes things like exhaust vents, plumbing vents, and basement windows.

- When shoveling, try to get the snow away from door frames, especially wood frames, to avoid unnecessary damage.
