🚨 HURRICANE PREPARATION: PROTECT YOUR HOME, YOUR PROPERTY & YOUR RIGHTS! 🌀đźŹ
With Hurricane Isaias threatening the Florida Panhandle, I want to remind our friends, neighbors, and families that preparing for a hurricane isn’t just about protecting your home. It’s also about protecting yourself financially if your property suffers damage.
Our firm handles homeowners’ insurance claims. Hhere are 6 important steps I strongly recommend taking BEFORE the storm arrives:
✅ 1. PHOTOGRAPH YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES. Take pictures of the declarations pages for BOTH your homeowners’ insurance and flood insurance policies. These are two separate policies! Save copies on your phone and in the cloud so you can access your coverage information if your home is damaged.
✅ 2. DOCUMENT YOUR PROPERTY’S CONDITION. Walk around your home and take detailed pictures and videos of your roof, ceilings, walls, windows, doors, fences, landscaping, and personal belongings. Don’t forget the inside of your home! This documentation can become critical evidence if your insurance company later disputes the extent or cause of the damage.
âś… 3. TAKE REASONABLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY. Secure outdoor furniture, install hurricane shutters, clear gutters and drains, and move valuables away from areas vulnerable to flooding. Protect your property as much as reasonably and safely possible.
âś… 4. CREATE A HOME INVENTORY. Photograph valuable items, including electronics, appliances, furniture, and other expensive possessions. Keep receipts when available.
âś… 5. SAVE IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. Keep insurance policies, identification, financial records, and other essential documents in a waterproof container or securely backed up online.
âś… 6. IF DAMAGE OCCURS, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING BEFORE CLEANUP. Once it is safe, photograph all damage before making repairs. Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, save receipts for emergency repairs, and notify your insurance company promptly.
⚠️ REMEMBER: Homeowners’ insurance generally does NOT cover flood damage. That’s why understanding the difference between your homeowners’ and flood insurance policies is so important.
Most importantly, your family’s safety always comes first. Follow local evacuation orders and never put yourself in danger to protect property.
If your home suffers storm damage and you have questions about your insurance company’s handling of your claim, we’re here to help.
