This past Friday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Choose Collaborative Family event and connect with fellow family law attorneys, mental health professionals, and forensic accountants who share a common goal: helping families navigate divorce with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Collaborative divorce is about more than reaching an agreement. It’s about bringing the right professionals together to find solutions that prioritize the well-being of the entire family.

I’m always grateful for opportunities to learn, connect, and continue advocating for a more peaceful and productive approach to divorce.

Thank you to Choose Collaborative Family for bringing us together and for the important work you do!

Protect their peace. Protect your future. Proceed with purpose. 💜

The best time to start thinking about the marital home? Before it becomes a point of conflict.

According to Lou Rodriguez, the moment a marital residence is identified as part of the marital assets is the time to establish a baseline evaluation that can be shared with the attorneys and parties involved.

You don’t necessarily need to immediately bring in multiple outside professionals or turn the home’s value into another contested issue.

Start with the fundamental question: What does it look like if you stay vs. sell?

Once you have that baseline information, you can begin making informed decisions about what each option actually means for your future.

Clarity first. Decisions second!

$900,000. That’s how much of a difference having the right information made for one client.

Just three days before mediation, a divorce attorney contacted Lou Rodriguez after opposing counsel insisted their appraisal was coming in, and that there was no reason to bring in anything else.

Lou provided an FLPVR, offering another data-driven look at the property’s value. According to Lou, opposing counsel reviewed it and responded within minutes: “We accept.”

The result: The client walked away with approximately $900,000 more.

One of the key features of FLPVR is its exclusionary section. It doesn’t just identify the comparable properties used—it explains why other comps were excluded and why they may not contribute to the opinion of value.

In divorce settlement negotiations, the numbers matter, but understanding the reasoning behind those numbers matters too.

🏡 Selling a house during divorce is a whole different animal.

When two people agree, a number is just a number. During divorce? The moment you put a number on the table, it can become your number vs. their number, something to defend or attack.

And while most clients already have an idea of what they want—keep the house, sell it, buy the other person out—there may be important financial and practical questions that need to be answered first.
That’s why clarity matters before decisions are made.

As Lou Rodriguez explains: you don’t know what you don’t know.

🏡 Divorce + Complex Real Estate with Anila Rasul
Kristen sits down with Anila Rasul to discuss how business owners and C-suite executives can best prepare for divorce when complex real estate interests are involved. From protecting what you’ve built to understanding the financial implications of major decisions, preparation and the right team can make all the difference.

🤝 Mediation + Staying Strategic with Michelle
Kristen also sits down with Mediator Michelle to discuss how to approach mediation strategically, keep the bigger picture in focus, and work toward solutions that actually accomplish your goals. As Michelle puts it:
“Accomplishing your goals is better than being right.”

🏡 Would your mortgage broker turn down money if it meant saving YOU money?

In this clip, Leah Bunning shares why she has turned down commissions when an alternative option was more beneficial for her client.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Leah firsthand, and I’ve seen the care and dedication she brings to her clients. She understands that doing what’s right for someone is far more important than simply closing a deal.

When navigating divorce, buying a home, or starting over financially, having the right professionals on your side can make all the difference.

At the end of the day, your mortgage broker should be looking out for YOUR best interests, not just their own bottom line. ❤️

Women are building wealth through homeownership, but are they paying more to do it? 🏠

In this clip, Leah Bunning, CDLP® shares a striking reality: single women own more homes than single men, yet women can still face disparities in interest rates, closing costs, and appraisals.

That’s why Leah is so passionate about education and advocacy—helping women understand the mortgage process, ask the right questions, and put themselves in the strongest financial position possible. Knowledge at the closing table matters.

The divorce is finalized. The agreement is signed. Then you find out you can’t actually do what you agreed to.

That’s the nightmare Leah Bunning, CDLP® sees far too often.

Clients come to her after signing a Marital Settlement Agreement requiring them to refinance or make another decision involving the marital home, only to discover the plan may not be financially possible.

Leah’s Biggest Piece of Advice: Be proactive, not reactive. The earlier you understand your mortgage options, the less likely you are to face an expensive surprise after the agreement is already signed.
