There are more than 1 million bicycle owners in South Florida, and sadly each year there are more than 2,000 accidents involving cyclists of all skills and experience. It's important that cyclists have an attorney that understands them and what it's like on the roads, and can advocate for them before and after an accident. George Palaidis is a South Florida cyclist and trial attorney at Gelch and

Associates, P.A., representing the rights of injured cyclists and advocating for greater safety on the roads. The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisement. Before you decide,
ask the attorney to send you free, written information about qualifications and experience.

A lot of people don’t know what sharrows actually mean.

That bike symbol on the road does not create new rights for cyclists in Florida.

Cyclists already have the legal right to use the roadway—and in many situations, they can legally take the lane when:
• The lane is too narrow to safely share
• There are hazards
• Riding near the edge is unsafe

Sharrows are only supposed to remind drivers of that.

E bikes are not toys. They can travel to almost 30 mph. Yet we are seeing more and more kids riding them out on Florida’s roads. And unfortunately, hospitals are seeing more and more of these children in their emergency rooms with traumatic injuries.

Parents: treat e-bikes like motor vehicles, not toys.

Drivers must give 3 feet when passing a bicyclist in Florida, even if that cyclist is in the bike lane. And if you can’t, slow down and wait to pass until you can. It’s the law (§316.083).

So what is “Dooring”?

Dooring happens when a car door opens directly into a cyclist’s path—and it’s a common Florida crash.

The law is clear: you cannot open a vehicle door into traffic unless it’s safe to do so.

If a driver or passenger opens a door without checking and causes a crash, that’s typically negligence—and liability usually falls on the person who opened the door.

Cyclists have no time or space to react. This is preventable.
