Story time. A few years ago, I had a client who was convinced I was not protecting his interests. He was anxious, frustrated, and on the day of an evidentiary hearing, he was very late to court. I kept apologizing to the judge while we waited.

When he finally arrived, he came with new counsel, a full file, and even an assistant who sat right behind me in the courtroom. New counsel advised that he had filed a notice of appearance and was there to observe. Needless to say, everyone was shocked. I was probably the most shocked.

I immediately made an oral motion to withdraw, which the judge granted.

Months later, that same client called and emailed asking me to take the case back because the new lawyer had “just taken his money” and gotten no results.

I understood his frustration, but sometimes people only realize your value after you are gone..
