As we recognize Juneteenth and reflect on freedom, equality and justice, we must also confront the inequities that continue to impact vulnerable children today.

Black children make up approximately 16% of Florida’s child population, yet account for nearly 44% of children in foster care statewide.

These disparities are tied to deeper systemic issues, including poverty, housing instability, unequal treatment, and barriers to family reunification. Awareness matters because every child deserves safety, stability and the opportunity to grow up with support and protection.

At Justice for Kids, we believe advocacy also means shining a light on the systems that disproportionately impact children and families.

Children placed in foster care or under state supervision are supposed to be protected.

When child welfare systems fail, the consequences can include physical injuries, emotional trauma, abuse, neglect, or even lifelong disabilities. These are not just “mistakes.” In many cases, they are preventable failures by the agencies and institutions entrusted with a child’s safety.

At Justice for Kids, a division of Kelley Kronenberg, we fight for children who have been injured, abused or neglected while in foster homes, group homes, residential facilities, shelters, or other state-supervised environments. Our mission is not only accountability, it’s protecting children’s futures and driving systemic change.

As Chantel Johnson, directing advocate at the Youth Law Center, powerfully argues in her recent CalMatters commentary: young people who grow up in the care of public systems should never have fewer rights than other survivors of child sexual abuse. If anything, they deserve greater protections and support.

No fiscal pressure justifies minimizing their trauma or suggesting their suffering matters less. Every survivor deserves the right to seek accountability and justice — regardless of where they grew up or who was responsible for their care.

Our firm stands with survivors and supports protecting the rights of vulnerable young people to have their voices heard.

NPR reported the disturbing child abuse news that at least five elementary-age students with disabilities were confined by special education teachers in wooden boxes in Upstate New York. According to the article, officials with New York state's education department are seeking sweeping reforms in the district.

Across the U.S., hundreds of thousands of children navigate a system strained by limited resources, staffing shortages and barriers to stability—challenges that demand urgent attention.

This piece is a call to action for policymakers, advocates and communities to work together to ensure every child has access to safety, stability and a voice.

It was inspiring to be among the hundreds of child advocates who attended the Florida's Children First Broward Advocates for Children Awards ceremony on March 18, 2026. Our firm has proudly supported this important organization since its inception. When the system fails the very children it’s meant to protect, who is held accountable? We are currently representing the minors (through their grandmother) mentioned in this news report, which details the heartbreaking allegations of abuse that these children have endured.

Behind every case like this are real children who deserved better. Justice for Kids remains committed to holding systems accountable and advocating for those whose voices too often go unheard.
