Too often, devastating cases are abandoned because they are considered “impossible.” Victims are left without justice. Wrongdoers escape accountability. And defendants learn that sometimes, if they make the fight hard enough, no one will keep fighting.
The Impossible Case Institute exists to change that by taking on the cases others cannot or will not pursue. cases with catastrophic consequences and no obvious path forward. Cases that demand deeper investigation, unconventional thinking, extraordinary resources, and the willingness to stay with the problem.
Through Built Different Trial Academy, ICI is also investing in the next generation of trial lawyers who will carry this work forward. This July, John Uustal led its two cohorts: Scholars, promising law students and early-career trial lawyers brought in from around the country to develop the skills that will support them as the next generation of plaintiff trial lawyers; and Fellows, practicing attorneys willing to go beyond the baseline and push the boundaries of what they thought possible in their cases and careers.
