Newton is a seasoned legal professional dedicated to social justice and
advocacy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from The City University of New York
before pursuing further education, obtaining her master’s degree in business
administration from the University of Bridgeport, and her Juris Doctoral Degree from The
City University School of Law. Admitted to the Southern District Federal

Court in 1999, the New York State Bar in 1999,
and to the United States Supreme Court in 2015, Elizabeth’s legal career has been marked
by a commitment to serving the indigent. She began by prosecuting child abuse and
neglect cases in Family Court with the Administration for Children Services, later
transitioning to representing tenants in Housing Court with the Legal Aid Society, Civil
Practice. Currently, she serves as the Supervising Attorney in the Criminal Defense
Practice of the Legal Aid Society, where she has represented thousands of indigents
individuals, including Youthful Offenders. Outside of her professional endeavors, Elizabeth is actively involved in the legal
community. She has held various leadership positions, including State Delegate, Board of
Directors, corresponding secretary, Financial Secretary, and Vice President for the Queens
County Women’s Bar Association. Additionally, for more than 10 years she co-chaired the
Criminal Law Committee for the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York and
participates in committees for the Queens County Bar Association, participated at the New York City Bar
Association, and for 8 years an active member and chair of the consumer affairs
committee at community board six. Elizabeth’s dedication and accomplishments have been recognized with prestigious
awards, including the Stephanie E. Kuperman award from the Women’s Bar Association of
the State of New York for outstanding achievement in legal matters involving juveniles. In
June 2023, she was installed as the President of the Queens County Women’s Bar
Association, further solidifying her leadership in the legal community.
