Criminal Law News
Effective August 7, 2025, New York updated its criminal discovery law -- the rules governing how and when prosecutors must share evidence. The amendments establish a 35-day deadline for defendants to challenge the prosecution’s evidence-sharing efforts, and create a detailed test for deciding whether the prosecution acted in good faith. The goal is to reduce technical dismissals while still protecting defendant’s rights to timely evidence.

Immigration News Alert

DHS ends automatic extensions for most work permits. For EAD renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025, the up-to-540-day automatic extension is gone. Filings prior to that date keep their automatic extensions, and narrow exceptions remain. This affects a wide range of EAD holders, including asylum applicants and people with pending adjustment of status to permanent resident.

Effective June 2025, New York makes it a Class B misdemeanor to wear a mask or facial covering to hide one’s identity while committing or fleeing a felony or serious misdemeanor. Punishable by up to 3 months in jail, this new law is a narrower version of the old “mask law,” which was repealed in 2020.
