One of the most common questions I get: "Do we really need to do anything? I mean, we just don't have very much."

The answer to question is YES, it would benefit you in many ways to have an estate plan, even if your assets are modest. Why?

Because:

* You get to choose a trusted person to handle your affairs at your passing, instead of someone that chooses it and may cause a fight among family.

* If you have minors (or disabled) children, you get to choose and designate the person(s) that will care for those children - instead of more than one family member going to court to fight it out.

* Even though you may not have what you consider to be "a lot," with a plan that you create, you choose exactly who and in what portions gets your assets at your passing. Otherwise, with nothing, the State will make that decision.

* Having a plan is the best way to avoid family disputes. Clear written instructions eliminate guesswork and arguments among relatives.

* Also: Powers of Attorney, part of a well-thought out plan, are great tools for your trusted agents to navigate your needs while you are living but incapacitated.
